ᐅ What is underneath the flooring?

Hello,
I started removing the flooring in our living room today. It’s not easy because the floor is very old and was glued down. Underneath the flooring, there is a black layer, similar to tar. Could it be tar, or what might it be?

Maybe someone can help me out.
