ᐅ What weight capacity does a standard BILLY bookshelf have?

Hello everyone, I have a specific question regarding the load capacity of Ikea Billy shelves. Specifically, I am interested in the maximum weight capacity of a standard Billy shelf panel, both according to the manufacturer’s specifications and from personal experience, as well as the total capacity for the whole shelving unit.
I understand that the load capacity varies depending on the material and mounting, but I would like to know the typical guidelines to use the shelf optimally—whether for books, folders, or decorative items.
Additionally, it would be helpful if someone could quickly share practical tips on how to potentially increase the load capacity or improve the overall stability. Thanks in advance!

I can only agree with Surela here but would like to go into more detail on how the load capacity is technically determined:
The individual shelves are made of 16 mm (5/8 inch) thick particleboard with a melamine coating. The maximum load of about 30 kg (66 lbs) per shelf is designed for an evenly distributed load, which corresponds to a load capacity of approximately 1.9 kN/m².
If you place the shelf unit alone without wall mounting, Ikea itself recommends reducing the maximum load per shelf to 15-20 kg (33-44 lbs) to avoid bending or tipping hazards.
The connecting fittings and back panels help to increase the overall stability, while the load capacity of an individual shelf changes due to the shelf being fixed in the side panels.
My tip: If you really want to store heavy or uneven loads on the BILLY, it’s worth installing targeted reinforcements or metal inserts under the shelves.

Summary for those who want it concise:
- 30 kg (66 lbs) per shelf with evenly distributed load and wall mounting
- Total weight for 6 shelves approx. 180 kg (396 lbs)
- Avoid placing heavy point loads on single spots
- Wall mounting is mandatory for safety and stability
This ensures that the BILLY shelving unit stands solid and durable.

In addition to wall mounting and avoiding point loads, adding metal brackets or braces under the shelves can help reinforce stability. Replacing the shelves with more solid versions made of solid wood or plywood can also significantly increase load capacity.
If the shelf will need to support a consistently high weight, for safety reasons I recommend not relying solely on the BILLY shelving unit, but considering supplementing it with a sturdy bookshelf designed for heavier loads.
