Hello everyone,

I am planning to buy some furniture from the Ikea Brimnes series, especially dressers and shelves. Before I store heavier items or use the furniture for other purposes, I have a question: What is the maximum weight these Brimnes pieces can generally support without causing damage or instability? I am particularly interested in the load capacity of individual shelves or drawers in kilograms, as I want to store different loads there, some of which may be quite heavy.

If anyone has exact manufacturer specifications or personal experience, I would greatly appreciate detailed information. It would also be helpful to know if there are differences in load capacity between the various items in the Brimnes series or if it is standardized across the range.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hello zarchen,

I can understand your concerns well, as I recently had similar questions myself. It is really important to know the load capacity before purchasing, especially if you plan to store heavier items.

I have a Brimnes dresser in my home and can say that each drawer easily holds up to about 15 kilograms (33 pounds). However, I have noticed that when fully loaded, the drawers can feel a bit stiff, which I attribute to the material quality and construction.

Your question shows that safety and durability are important to you, which I think is great. My recommendation would be to distribute heavier items across several shelves.

So far, I haven’t noticed many differences; most pieces are built similarly, but of course, there can be variations, especially if there are more drawers. I hope this helps you!

Hello zarchen,

your question about the maximum load capacity of the Ikea Brimnes furniture is quite valid and deserves a detailed explanation. The Brimnes series mainly consists of particleboard with a melamine coating, which generally ensures medium load capacity; however, the individual components are designed differently.

1) Load capacity of the shelves: Ikea specifies a maximum load capacity between 15 and 20 kilograms (33 to 44 pounds) for most shelves or platforms in Brimnes furniture, depending on the size and the mounting method of the individual shelves. The load capacity can vary if shelves rest only on dowels instead of being supported by additional braces.

2) Drawers: The drawer runners are mostly simple metal slides with rollers; the typical maximum load is about 10 to 12 kilograms (22 to 26 pounds) per drawer. Exceeding this load continuously can lead to warping of the drawer fronts or issues with the rollers.

3) Overall load capacity of the furniture piece: Depending on the size (e.g., a chest of drawers with 3 or more drawers), a total load capacity is specified. For a Brimnes chest of drawers with 3 drawers, the load capacity is usually around 50 kilograms (110 pounds) distributed across the entire piece. However, this also depends on wall mounting, which is mandatory at higher loads to prevent tipping hazards.

4) Assembly quality: Proper and precise assembly is crucial because even small assembly errors can significantly affect stability.

In conclusion, I would recommend:
- Carefully check the assembly instructions
- Distribute heavy weight across multiple shelves/drawers
- Use the wall anchoring system provided by Ikea
- For very heavy loads (over 15 kilograms (33 pounds) per shelf), consider sturdier furniture made of solid wood or metal

If you specify exactly which furniture pieces or sizes you are using, a more precise assessment can be made.

I am happy to assist with any further questions!

Hello everyone,

I would like to add to kibutar’s points and share a few practical tips from my experience.

- Ikea Brimnes furniture is designed for typical household use, which means it can easily handle everyday items like clothing, books, or light equipment.
- For most shelves, Ikea officially recommends a maximum load capacity of around 15 to 20 kilograms (33 to 44 pounds), as already mentioned.
- However, drawers should generally not be loaded with more than 10 kilograms (22 pounds) to avoid damage to the rollers and drawer mechanism.

That is exactly right. Storing heavy items for extended periods can negatively affect the mechanism.

- It is also important to distribute the weight properly. For example, if you want to store several heavy binders or devices, avoid placing them all in one drawer; spread the load across multiple drawers.

- Additionally, I always recommend securing the furniture to the wall to improve stability and prevent accidents, especially if there are children in the household.

If you like, I can also give you some tips on how to reinforce the furniture further.

I hope this helps, and I wish you the best of luck with your project!
