ᐅ What is the load-bearing capacity of the IKEA BRIMNES shelves?

Hello everyone, I am currently looking into the load-bearing capacity of the shelves from the IKEA Brimnes shelving system. I am particularly interested in how much weight a single shelf can support in the medium to long term without sagging or becoming damaged. Since IKEA often does not provide specific information, it would be helpful to hear first-hand experiences or, if anyone knows official data, that would be great as well. I am thinking about typical loads such as books or binders, but also heavier items. Are there differences between the various shelf options? And how does installation or additional reinforcement affect load capacity? Thanks in advance for your help!

Briefly and to the point: Brimnes floors are not designed for very heavy loads. Stability improves somewhat with solid inserts. For heavy loads, always add extra reinforcement or glue wooden battens underneath.

Hello! I’ve had the BRIMNES shelf for about a year now, use only the original shelves, and mainly place books on it – no problems so far! The shelves easily support around 15 kg (33 lbs) daily, and I haven’t noticed any warping yet. What I can recommend is to place heavy items as close to the side panels as possible, as this distributes the load better! Also, be careful with moisture since these MDF panels are not very durable in damp conditions. Keep it up, the shelf is really solid for the price!

A bit of lightness in the matter: Yes, the BRIMNES shelves are not high-performance boards, but they are great for everyday use! Imagine each shelf can hold roughly a small box full of books – that’s enough for typical use. If you’re careful with heavy loads and distribute the weight wisely, you’ll enjoy them for a long time. Adding some wooden slats provides a ‘power boost’ – basically a fitness program for your shelf! 😉

Exactly, these are furniture pieces made from MDF with a laminated finish, primarily designed for living areas and moderate loads. Overloading can cause permanent warping. For very heavy loads, metal or solid wood shelves are more suitable.

The 15 kg (33 lbs) per shelf is a good guideline. But I wonder if the material (MDF) changes over time, for example due to moisture or prolonged weight.

Aging of MDF can be accelerated by moisture; furniture kept dry maintains its stability longer. Permanent loads of 15 kg (33 lbs) usually do not cause damage if the assembly is done properly.

In addition: Long-term loading without extra reinforcement can cause permanent sagging in MDF floors. Moisture significantly weakens the material, even though the foil finish provides some protection. Regular inspection and careful handling when loading are recommended.
