Hello everyone, I am planning to rearrange my existing Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets and am looking for the best way to approach this. I am especially interested in efficient methods to redesign the cabinet layout without much extra effort or unnecessary damage to the units. I understand that the Metod series is modular, but I am unsure about the best way to reposition the cabinets, particularly with regard to the fastening points and anchors—including the stove and sink cabinets. Are there any tips on how to best dismantle and realign the cabinets without having to buy many new accessories? Or would it be better to just swap individual fronts? How do you handle optimal adjustability, and which basic tools are essential for this? I am looking forward to your experiences and advice!
Great that you’re already sharing so many useful tips here! 😄 I think it’s important to approach the whole process with a bit of ease – of course, screws, joints, and technical details matter, but without taking it all too seriously. Sometimes it’s nice just to move the cabinets around and see what happens spontaneously. Of course, some planning is necessary, but who says you can’t experiment a little?
And when it comes to changing the fronts: that’s really straightforward and saves a lot of time during the redesign. I’ve often noticed that you can simply fall in love with a corner of the kitchen all over again when a cabinet is placed somewhere different – sounds cheesy, but it’s true! 😄

Hello everyone, I’d like to add a practical tip: To save time and effort when rearranging Metod cabinet modules, I recommend doing a detailed plan in advance using 2D or even 3D kitchen planners. This helps avoid later conflicts with water or electrical connections and ensures a harmonious overall look.
Also, when dismantling, it’s worth keeping all screws and small parts very organized, ideally in labeled boxes or zip bags. This makes reusing them much easier later on.
Regarding the fronts, if you’re only planning small repositioning, it’s usually best to leave the fronts on – this saves time. Removing them only makes sense for a major redesign.

Another aspect that haugethi62 should consider is the load capacity of the countertop when cabinets are rearranged in different configurations. Depending on the new layout, the structural support of the countertop can change, especially if cabinets with heavy appliances are moved. Also important is the proper anchoring to the wall, particularly with Metod, as stability can be compromised otherwise.
I recommend checking the wall’s strength before reinstalling using a suitable drill and appropriate anchors—especially if the kitchen is mounted on drywall or plasterboard walls. Another tip: cabinet legs and adjustable feet should be carefully inspected and, if necessary, readjusted before moving to compensate for any unevenness.

PeoDaniel2 Jan 2023 12:38In addition to the good points made by SONLIS and Nathanaelk, I would like to add that when reorganizing the IKEA Metod kitchen, it is essential to keep the alignment of the cabinet fronts in mind to maintain a harmonious overall appearance.
It is worthwhile to consider beforehand whether the cabinets should remain in a grid layout or be arranged horizontally. Tilting the cabinets is technically possible with Metod, but it is more complex and often disrupts the visual flow.
It is also advisable, when relocating the cabinets, to think about additional internal organization options such as drawer inserts or pull-outs, which can make the new layout even more practical.

I can gladly go into more detail here, as I have personally remodeled several Metod kitchens and had similar questions.Thank you for your very detailed feedback, Nathanaelk! Your tips on maintaining the connecting fittings are invaluable. I’m curious which replacement parts you recommend for kitchens that are moved frequently and where you usually source them. Also, do you have a method for aligning the cabinets during assembly so that all edges line up perfectly? I want to avoid any gaps or height differences on the fronts later on.
One more question: How do you personally manage the handling of the connector tabs in tight kitchen spaces? In other words, fitting those parts together often has to be done in very limited openings.

Nathanaelk3 Jan 2023 11:08[@haugethi62] Glad the information is helpful to you! Regarding your questions: replacement parts like connector brackets, screws, and fittings can be reordered directly from Ikea – they often offer sets specifically for Metod. Alternatively, some hardware stores carry compatible parts, but the original ones tend to be more reliable.
When aligning the cabinets, it helps to follow this order: first, use a spirit level and a long straight edge to align the heavy base units precisely, then insert the connector brackets only after the units are correctly positioned. Minor gaps can be adjusted by carefully shifting the connections between the modules.
Handling tight spaces is challenging, especially with tall cabinets. I often use small insertion tools or thin levers to gently position the connectors. Having a helper to slightly lift or hold the units while connecting them is very useful.
If you have more specific questions about dimensions or cabinet types, just let me know!
