haugethi621 Jan 2023 08:17Hello everyone, I am planning to rearrange my existing Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets and am looking for the best way to approach this. I am especially interested in efficient methods to redesign the cabinet layout without much extra effort or unnecessary damage to the units. I understand that the Metod series is modular, but I am unsure about the best way to reposition the cabinets, particularly with regard to the fastening points and anchors—including the stove and sink cabinets. Are there any tips on how to best dismantle and realign the cabinets without having to buy many new accessories? Or would it be better to just swap individual fronts? How do you handle optimal adjustability, and which basic tools are essential for this? I am looking forward to your experiences and advice!
Hello haugethi62, thank you for your detailed question! Generally, with Ikea Metod cabinets, the modules are quite flexible – they can often be disassembled and rearranged without much difficulty. Important: When dismantling, make sure to carefully loosen all screws and fasteners to avoid damaging any connection points. For reorganizing, especially if you plan to move the area around the stove or sink, I recommend taking into account the existing connections (water, electricity) and planning accordingly beforehand if necessary. The tools you usually need are a cordless drill with the appropriate bits, a spirit level, and a measuring tape. Changing the cabinet fronts is often straightforward if you want to update the appearance, but when it comes to repositioning the modules, focus on solid wall mounts and secure connections between the individual cabinets.

I’m also interested in your experiences regarding the durability of the screw holes and connector clips when cabinets are disassembled and reassembled multiple times. Have you noticed any wear that might affect stability? How about the plastic guides and connectors? I want to avoid ending up needing to replace them after just two rearrangements. Additionally, it would be useful to know how to best position cabinets of different heights or depths when reorganizing.

Nathanaelk1 Jan 2023 11:54I’m happy to go into more detail here, as I have rebuilt several Metod kitchens myself and had similar questions. The most important aspect when converting is to handle the connecting fittings (especially the so-called “Euro special connecting fitting system” from Ikea) with care. These are designed for 10+ assemblies but can tear or break under rough handling or excessive load, which leads to instability. It is advisable during the first disassembly to remove all screws completely, apply a bit of lubricant to the connecting bolts, and especially check the plastic clips carefully. When reusing components multiple times, it may be wise to replace some connecting parts to ensure long-term stability.
Regarding the different cabinet sizes: a practical layout is based on functionality—for example, tall cabinets for ovens on one side, base cabinets for the sink on another. When redesigning, also pay attention to the load on the countertops and ensure that the primary load from heavy appliances is properly supported.
If you like, I can also provide tips on how to level the cabinets correctly and protect them from improper loading.

Your answers are really helpful, even though I haven’t worked with Metod cabinets myself yet. I really appreciate how thoroughly you explain everything!
I just want to mention that among my friends, mounting the wall bracket has often been a tricky issue – if the wall isn’t perfectly flat, adjusting the setup can become quite stressful. That’s why I recommend always having a second person to help, especially when placing the cabinets higher up or further apart. And patience is definitely worth its weight in gold!
Of course, technical details are important, but the human aspect shouldn’t be overlooked. How do you handle it when a cabinet suddenly doesn’t fit properly because an angle or wall isn’t quite right? I usually comfort myself with the thought: “This way you get to know every kitchen even better!”
