Hello everyone, I am planning to paint an Ikea Platsa system myself in order to match the color with my living space. Since the parts are made of particleboard with a melamine finish, I am unsure about the best way to proceed to achieve an optimal result without chipping or uneven surfaces. Which types of paint are especially suitable for PLATSA? How should the surface be prepared to ensure the paint adheres well and looks even? I am looking for a detailed guide on painting PLATSA, including tips on priming, sanding techniques, types of paint, and drying times. Thank you in advance!

For preparing Ikea PLATSA surfaces, sanding the melamine foil is essential because it is very smooth and paint often does not adhere well. Use fine sandpaper (grit 220 to 320) to lightly roughen the surface. After that, I recommend a primer specifically designed for plastic or melamine-coated surfaces. For the paint itself, water-based acrylic or two-component (2K) paints are suitable. Apply the paint layers as thinly as possible to avoid chipping. It is important to strictly follow drying times and allow each coat to cure properly. Finally, you can sand lightly with fine sandpaper between coats to achieve a smooth finish.

That's right, roughening is key! If you underestimate this step, the paint won't adhere properly.

I once painted my PLATSA parts with regular spray paint—applied a primer first, which surprisingly gave good results. However, a completely even finish is only achievable with a spray gun or airbrush. For those who want to try DIY without much equipment: applying multiple coats and sanding between layers helps.

And don’t worry about paint drying times; patience pays off! Good luck – you’re going to have a really sharp piece of furniture.

Use a primer, sand it well, then apply thin layers of paint. It is better to use several thin coats rather than one thick one. Observe the drying time. Finished.

Additionally: It is important that the primer is suitable for melamine surfaces, as not every primer adheres properly to these materials. It is best to use primers specifically labeled for this purpose or those designed for furniture.

Also, a complete drying of the primer before painting is recommended. If you cannot sand all edges properly, apply filler again along the edges.

To achieve the best paint finish on an Ikea PLATSA system, the following procedure is recommended:

- First, lightly roughen the melamine surface using 240-grit sandpaper, taking care not to sand through it.
- Clean the surface thoroughly to remove all dust.
- Apply a special primer designed for melamine-coated furniture as a base.
- After the primer has fully dried, perform a fine intermediate sanding.
- Apply water-based acrylic paints or two-component (2K) coatings thinly in several layers.
- Lightly sand between each layer.
- The final coat should be impact- and scratch-resistant; 2K coatings offer advantages here.

This process reduces paint peeling and results in smooth surfaces with an attractive appearance.
