Hello everyone,
I recently purchased several Ikea Platsa furniture pieces and would like to paint them, as I'm not entirely happy with the surface finish. My specific concern is how to best prepare and paint the Platsa furniture to achieve a durable and even result.
I'm particularly interested in:
- What type of sandpaper is best for preparation?
- Do I need a primer, and if so, which one would be suitable?
- Which types of paint work well for the surface of Platsa shelves (melamine-coated particleboard)?
- Are there any pitfalls to watch out for during application or drying?
I have done some reading, but the information is often vague or contradictory. It would be great if someone with experience or good tips could advise me specifically regarding Ikea Platsa. Thanks in advance!

Regarding the topic of roller versus spray paint: For smooth, melamine-coated surfaces, it is essential to use spray paint. Using a roller can leave streaks and is often not fine enough for this type of surface. It remains important to apply thin layers and allow sufficient drying time.
I would like to add that with Ikea Platsa furniture, it is often advisable to fully disassemble the pieces before painting. This way, you can reach all edges and also work on the interior surfaces, which significantly improves the appearance and ensures lasting durability.
When painting doors or fronts, make sure they are securely fixed in place during painting (for example, with hooks or clamps) so that no areas are touching and the paint can dry evenly.
Be sure to check the compatibility of the primer and paint beforehand. Some inexpensive products do not adhere properly to melamine.

I understand very well how important a good result is for you. I felt the same with my Platsa shelves. At first, I was worried about the smooth surface and the effort involved, but after careful preparation, I was very satisfied with the outcome.
If it helps to reassure you: take your time, work deliberately and step by step. It can be frustrating when you feel the paint isn’t applying perfectly at times. Don’t get discouraged.
If you like, I can share the exact types of paint and products I used later. We’ll definitely be able to collaborate well here!

Would you recommend spray or roller technique? And how important is sanding between primer and spray paint? For your situation, I definitely recommend spray paint. Sanding between coats is essential to ensure consistent adhesion of subsequent layers and to achieve a smooth surface. This prevents skinning or unwanted texture.
Additionally, you should pay attention to room temperature and humidity. Excessive moisture or cold temperatures will extend drying times and can cause paint defects. A dust-free, well-ventilated area is ideal.
