Hello everyone, I am currently planning to install several Billy shelves in my basement and am looking for the best mounting options. The basement walls are partly slightly damp, and the floor is made of concrete. I don’t just want to place the shelves there; I want to secure them properly so they stand firmly and don’t tip over. I am also interested in which fastening materials work best for different wall surfaces like plaster, concrete, or sometimes slightly crumbly substrates. How do you handle this in basement rooms? Are there any special tips for preparation or moisture protection measures? I look forward to your experiences and advice!

A small recommendation: Use a rotary hammer when drilling into concrete or brick walls. This makes handling easier and ensures precise holes. Regarding moisture: Place a foil behind the shelf to prevent moisture from reaching the wood.

Thank you all for your valuable tips! The idea of a backward slope combined with metal brackets sounds like a good solution. I will first check and, if necessary, remove the plaster at the planned points, then select suitable anchors. I now have a better understanding of the moisture risk.

One last question: Has anyone had experience creating an additional connection between several BILLY shelves (for example, detachable plugs or clamps) to increase stability? I want to connect the shelves side by side, so if anyone has ideas, please share.

Yes, that’s a good idea. IKEA offers special connecting brackets designed to fit between two BILLY shelves. Alternatively, simple screw connections with corner braces installed inside between two shelves are recommended – this provides strong lateral stability and prevents the shelves from shifting against each other.

When assembling, make sure that the brackets or screws are not too thick, so the shelves are not pushed apart.

That’s exactly how I did it. It adds extra security and the overall structure is nicely stable. If you want to remove a shelf later, you can do so without much effort.
