Hello everyone, I am currently looking into the best way to combine the KALLAX shelving system with the BESTÅ cabinets from IKEA.

I am especially interested in how to connect both series visually and functionally to create a harmonious overall look while also benefiting from the advantages of both systems.

Do you have any experience, planning tips, or perhaps specific combinations where KALLAX and BESTÅ work well together? It would also be helpful to know if there are any particular modular features or design tricks you would recommend to achieve a smooth transition between the two furniture types.

tankin,

regarding color coordination: In my experience, it works very well to focus on one color scheme. For example, if you keep KALLAX in white, I recommend choosing one of the white or at least light wood finishes for BESTÅ that doesn’t differ too much—so rather white-oiled oak instead of a dark wood look.

This way, the overall appearance stays harmonious without looking boring. It’s also important to check whether the surfaces are matte or glossy, so nothing clashes awkwardly.

One more tip: Use suitable handles or frames to create visual repetitions; this adds calmness to the overall look.

Hello tankin,

I think the question "How to best combine KALLAX with BESTÅ?" really depends on the use of space and the atmosphere you want to create. If you want to bring more life into the room, feel free to mix different finishes. This way, the combination of KALLAX and BESTÅ can appear as a creative blend rather than a rigid furniture setup.

I like that idea because it creates a connection between the different units. A few colorful handles or even adhesive films can work wonders without much effort. 🙂

I would like to address the social aspect here: it’s not just about appearance, but also about how well the two modules complement each other in everyday use.

When KALLAX is used openly and flexibly, for example as a varied shelving unit, it complements the closed BESTÅ cabinets perfectly, which can store more private or delicate items.

I think it’s important that the furniture works well together both visually and functionally. Additionally, you should ensure that the combination feels comfortable, as being too fragmented or too rigid can also feel uninviting.

Hello everyone,

I find the discussion here very helpful!

Another point I would like to add regarding the question "How to best connect KALLAX with BESTÅ?" concerns the use of accessories: For example, there are doors and drawers available for the KALLAX system that allow you to close off open compartments if desired. This way, you can have some parts open and some closed in both systems.

Additionally, using lighting that can be mounted on both systems in some way is worthwhile. This creates a visual link and really highlights both pieces.

I hope this gives you some more ideas, tankin!
