Hello everyone, I recently bought a Hemnes shelving unit from Ikea and I’m wondering what the best way is to clean the shelves without damaging the surface and to keep it looking nice for as long as possible. Since it is painted solid wood, I want to avoid using harsh cleaners that could harm the finish or leave streaks. Does anyone have tips on which cleaning products or home remedies work well, or whether it’s better to just use a damp cloth? Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

In general, it would be helpful to know what kind of dirt or stains are present in order to give more targeted cleaning advice.

This is an important point I would like to add. For example, if you are dealing with greasy or sticky residues, you can treat the area with a slightly damp cloth and a mild dishwashing detergent solution. For dust or normal signs of use, dry wiping is usually sufficient. If the stains are paint or dried residues, you should proceed very carefully, as mechanical action can damage the paint layer.

I have had good results using lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap. Avoid harsh chemicals, as they can quickly damage the paint. Just gently wipe and then dry afterwards.

It is important not to make the surface too wet during cleaning. Use a damp cloth and dry thoroughly afterward. Other cleaning agents have not produced better results for me.

That sounds like an ideal solution to always have on hand. And as I always say, it also saves money – and stress.

For long-term effect, maybe occasionally wipe with a dry cloth to prevent dust from attracting dirt.

Thank you for the tip! In my case, it’s often fingerprints and sometimes small adhesive residues from stickers. I will try using dishwashing detergent and a damp microfiber cloth, then wipe it dry immediately. Is there anything else that can be used instead of dishwashing detergent if the shelves need to be cleaned more frequently? I want to avoid building up layers.

For more frequent cleaning, I recommend using dry or only slightly damp microfiber cloths without any additives. Alternatively, distilled water can be used to avoid limescale spots caused by tap water. Dish soap should only be used occasionally, as it can leave residues. Additionally, you can try a furniture care cloth designed specifically for lacquered wood surfaces, which can refresh the finish without leaving sticky layers. In general, less is more when it comes to cleaning.
