Hello everyone, I’m about to assemble the IKEA Brimnes wardrobe and wanted to ask here in the forum: What do you think is the best tip for putting together the IKEA Brimnes? I’m especially interested in what I should pay attention to beforehand, the most efficient way to proceed step by step, and if there are common mistakes or pitfalls to avoid. It would also be helpful if you could share advice on which tools are absolutely necessary and whether you have any experience handling heavy furniture parts with the Brimnes. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello baudan,

I would like to add that you should regularly check the measurements during assembly. Even small deviations in the initial steps can accumulate later and cause issues when installing the drawers.

Insert all screws loosely first, without fully tightening them. This way, you can still make adjustments

I can only emphasize this. Tightening screws evenly increases stability and prevents warped parts.

Important: Work on a sufficiently large surface—ideally on the floor with a soft underlay to avoid damage.

Also, after completing each assembly step, take a short break to check your progress and ventilate the area—this helps maintain focus and avoid mistakes.

A question for you: Have you planned enough time? Some assemble the Brimnes in 3 hours, while others take half a day with breaks, which I personally recommend.

Thanks for the tip, Keatondra.

I am actually planning to allow more time. Better to go slow and do it right than to have to redo everything in the end. I will definitely carry out the dimensional checks.

Back to pre-drilling and screwing: can anyone confirm if it is really necessary? Some say the wood is pre-drilled, so you just need to screw it in. I don’t want to do anything unnecessary.

Who here has experience specifically with Brimnes wood and pre-drilling the screws?

Hello baudan,

Regarding your question: The Brimnes wood is MDF/particleboard, which usually comes with pre-drilled holes. For these panels, pre-drilling is generally not necessary and can even be harmful, as it makes the hole unnecessarily larger and the screw holds less securely.

Pre-drilling makes more sense for solid wood or very hard panels, but not for IKEA particleboard.

I therefore recommend inserting the screws without pre-drilling—as stated in the instructions—and using a cordless drill with low torque to avoid damaging the material.

I’m a bit worried that the wood might split if I pre-drill incorrectly.

That’s a valid concern, but for particleboard, the risk mentioned above is rather low because these panels do not split as much as solid wood.

So: carefully screw in the screws, that will be sufficient.

I agree with PLOMA. IKEA furniture is almost always designed so that you can assemble it with minimal extra tools or preparation. Just screw in the fasteners at the pre-drilled holes carefully, and you're done.

My tip: lay out the materials as shown in the instructions, and avoid screwing things together randomly. If you take your time with the first piece and check everything, the rest usually goes smoothly on its own.

Perfect, thank you both for the clarification.

I will definitely work without pre-drilling and set the cordless screwdriver carefully.

That sounds like a plan I can easily follow.

I will report back once the assembly is complete. Many thanks for your helpful responses!
