Hello everyone, I am currently considering getting an Ikea Pax wardrobe for my bedroom. Since such purchases are usually intended to last for a long time, I would like to know: What is the average lifespan of Ikea Pax wardrobes? I am especially interested in how stable these pieces of furniture are in everyday use under normal conditions, whether they remain functional after several years, and which factors might affect their durability. I look forward to your experiences and assessments!

Hello Gapeo58, your question about the average lifespan of Ikea Pax wardrobes is very well posed, as it involves several factors to consider.

In general, the Pax series is positioned in the mid-range in terms of quality. The construction is mostly based on medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and particleboard, which are fairly durable but not comparable to solid wood.

Typically, a Pax wardrobe will last 10 to 15 years with normal use and proper care. Key factors include:
- The load (how much weight is placed on the shelves? Weight increases stress on the fittings)
- Assembly quality: When assembled correctly, the joints stabilize better
- Environmental conditions: Humidity and strong temperature fluctuations can cause the materials to wear faster

Tips for longer lifespan:
- Handle the hinges carefully
- Do not place the wardrobe on uneven floors, as this can cause the structure to warp
- Avoid overloading the shelves

I hope this helps you so far. I can also provide information on specific models or joint types if you wish.

With normal use, you can expect about 10 to 15 years. Construction and maintenance are crucial.

That sounds reasonable, but I would be interested to know what data these estimates are based on. Ikea often makes slight changes to material thicknesses and construction methods, which could affect durability.

Furthermore, I think the individual level of usage should be defined more precisely. Is the wardrobe used heavily on a daily basis, or does it mostly remain static in the room?

Are there any testimonials from people who have been using their wardrobes for more than 15 years? Such long-term data would be valuable to better assess the reliability of the average lifespan.

Hello everyone,

I would like to take a more technical and detailed look at the lifespan of the Ikea Pax wardrobes:

The Pax series mainly uses the following:
- Construction from MDF and particleboard with melamine-coated surfaces
- Steel fittings and drawer runners

The materials are generally durable, but the following points should be considered:

1. Load on the shelves: According to IKEA, the maximum load capacity per shelf panel is usually around 15-25 kg (33-55 lbs). If this is exceeded, shelves may bend or warp, which reduces stability.

2. Floor leveling: Since the wardrobes are relatively large, the floor must be level to prevent twisting. Otherwise, stress can cause material fatigue.

3. Assembly: The self-tapping screws should be tightened firmly but not overtightened. Otherwise, the MDF panel can lose grip, weakening the structure.

4. Use of sliding doors: These require special sliding rails that can wear out over time. Usually, these parts are replaceable.

5. Environmental conditions: Damp basements or very dry rooms can cause cracks or swelling.

Based on experience, Pax wardrobes last about 10-20 years under normal living room conditions and proper assembly.

If you plan for long-term use, make sure to secure the wardrobe correctly to the wall to prevent tipping accidents.

I am curious: Where do you plan to place the wardrobe, and how heavily will it be loaded? This can significantly affect its lifespan.

Thank you for the detailed response. I plan to place the wardrobe in my bedroom on a laminate floor. The floor is fairly level, so that shouldn’t be an issue.

The contents will mainly be clothing – shirts, sweaters, and perhaps some heavier jackets and shoes in the lower section. The latter will be separated by shelves or drawers.

Wall mounting would be mandatory for me, as there are also small children in the household.

What I’m mainly interested in is whether the hinges and sliding rails might fail after several years of daily use (opening and closing doors, drawers), or if they are generally designed to be durable?
