Hello everyone, I am looking for creative and practical ideas on how to add color to the Ikea Hemnes furniture series. I am especially interested in techniques or materials that work well to brighten up the typical white or wood-colored Hemnes furniture without losing their original character. Are there any experiences with painting techniques such as glazes, chalk paint, or adhesive films? How can you give the furniture a lively appearance while keeping it harmonious at the same time? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

For example, you can paint the back panels of shelves or the inside of drawers with bold colors.
Exactly, those kinds of details make the difference. I often find completely modernizing furniture to be over the top. But small colorful areas break up the serious look and make it much more interesting.

For a colorful update, I recommend replacing metal handles with colorful or gold ones. This instantly creates a small makeover without much effort.

One more practical tip: Felt-tip pens or acrylic markers are very suitable for adding patterns or small color accents.

I would like to suggest incorporating texture alongside color. For example, different surface finishes could be combined, such as matte paints with glossy details or polished metal surfaces. This creates interesting contrasts and a vibrant effect that works not only through color but also through tactile qualities.

A touch of texture can actually add more depth to the design. For example, using 3D tape or paint textures mixed with glue and sand, which create a slightly grainy surface once dry. However, it needs to match the rest of the interior to keep the overall look harmonious.

That’s an important point, thank you. I prefer subtle colors that still feel lively. Maybe I’ll first try the idea of colored drawer fronts with a matte clear coat to create a durable surface. Thanks to everyone for all the great arguments and advice!
