Hello everyone, I am looking for creative and practical ideas on how to add color to the Ikea Hemnes furniture series. I am especially interested in techniques or materials that work well to brighten up the typical white or wood-colored Hemnes furniture without losing their original character. Are there any experiences with painting techniques such as glazes, chalk paint, or adhesive films? How can you give the furniture a lively appearance while keeping it harmonious at the same time? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

The easiest option is paints that are specifically designed for furniture, usually chalk paints. With these, you can quickly paint the Hemnes pieces entirely or just add individual accents.

Alternatively, I recommend colorful self-adhesive films. They are quick to apply and can be easily removed if needed.

I would completely sand down the surfaces and then paint them with water-based chalk paint. For long-lasting protection, apply a matte clear coat on top – it looks good and feels high quality.

Interesting question, but why choose Hemnes in the first place? I find the Hemnes series often looks too plain and sterile. Maybe it’s better to be bolder right from the start and go for unusual color combinations or even patterns to finally break away from the usual Ikea look. Colorful, yes, but please not boring.

There are several proven methods for painting Hemnes furniture: - Using chalk or acrylic paints, which provide good adhesion - Applying self-adhesive films for temporary solutions - Creating graphic accents with stencils or tape art - Oil-based paints are less suitable because they take a long time to dry and can be problematic on veneered surfaces It is practical to lightly roughen the surface before painting to ensure better adhesion.
