Hello everyone, I noticed that some of the wooden parts of an Ikea Hemnes furniture piece have started to rot. These are mainly load-bearing or glued components that are becoming brittle and even show small areas with visible decay. I’m wondering what the best course of action is. What really helps when Hemnes wooden parts start to rot? Are there specific repair methods, such as wood hardener or filler, or is it better to replace the parts entirely? Replacing some parts can be quite complicated, so I would like to know if the problem can be reliably managed with repair products. Thanks in advance for any advice and tips!

If the wooden parts are already rotten, replacing them is often the only option. Try stabilizing the structure first with wood hardener, but in cases of severe rot, this is not a long-term solution.

To repair rotten wood parts in Ikea Hemnes furniture, the affected area should first be carefully inspected. If the rot is only surface-level, a wood hardener can be applied, which penetrates the wood and strengthens the fibers. Afterward, the damaged areas should be filled using a two-component wood filler. It is important that the wood hardener is completely dry before filling. However, for load-bearing or severely damaged parts, this is only a temporary solution. In such cases, replacing the affected wood parts is recommended, as the stability would otherwise remain compromised. When replacing, it is advisable to use identical solid wood parts or reinforced replacement pieces that match the furniture.

Thank you, that sounds reasonable. Do you need to pay special attention to the type of wood with Ikea Hemnes? In my opinion, it is mostly pine or spruce, but some parts are also made of MDF. Can wood hardener generally be used on these types of wood, or should you differentiate? Also, how long should you wait before applying filler?

Ikea Hemnes furniture is generally made of pine wood with a lacquer or stain finish, sometimes using MDF as the substrate material. Wood hardener works very well on pine wood because it can deeply penetrate the open wood fibers, stabilizing any decayed material. However, wood hardener cannot penetrate deeply into MDF, as it is a pressed board-like material, so mechanical repair or replacement is more common in this case.

In general, you should allow the wood hardener to dry completely for at least 24 hours before proceeding with filler. The curing time often depends on temperature and humidity, and the product instructions are usually reliable. Afterward, two-component wood filler is well suited for repairs because it is strong and can be sanded.

Yes, that is an important point. Hemnes is usually made of solid pine wood, which is relatively soft and absorbs moisture quickly. However, some parts are made of MDF or veneer.

Regarding treatment:
- For solid wood, wood consolidant works very well because it penetrates and binds the fibers.
- For MDF, you should avoid liquid wood consolidants, as the material hardly absorbs liquids and can be damaged.

When filling repairs, a two-component (2K) filler is advisable. It’s best to carry out the repair as early as possible to prevent the spread of rot. Finally, it’s recommended to thoroughly reseal or varnish the surface to keep new moisture out.

Have you found out why the wooden parts became rotten? Was there moisture intrusion, or are the furniture pieces heavily loaded?
