Hello everyone, I recently noticed that the doors of my IKEA Billy shelf make an annoying squeaking or creaking noise when opened. This doesn’t happen immediately after assembling the furniture, but only after some time of use. I suspect it has to do with the hinges or the rollers, but I’m not sure what the best way to fix it is. Does anyone have tips on what specifically helps against the creaking? Should I unscrew the hinges to clean or lubricate them? If so, which lubricant is suitable? Or are there other important parts I should check? I want to solve this permanently without compromising stability. Thanks in advance for your help!
Hello ADONKLO,
What you’re describing is very familiar to me – squeaking doors on BILLY units are usually related to the hinges, as they often lack sufficient lubrication or accumulate dust. The best remedy is a specialized silicone spray or a very light oil, such as sewing machine oil. It’s important to clean the hinges first, preferably with a lint-free cloth, to remove dust or buildup.
You don’t necessarily need to unscrew them; usually, it’s enough to open the door, apply a small amount of oil sparingly, and then open and close the door several times to distribute the lubricant. Avoid WD-40, as it can damage the surface and attract dust.
Also, be careful not to use too much lubricant – an excess can become sticky and cause new issues. If needed, you can also tighten the hinge screws slightly if they are loose.
If your BILLY unit has doors with rollers, you can treat those rollers with silicone oil if they squeak.
I hope this helps! 🙂

Could the creaking also indicate slight deformations of the door or frame? Wood sometimes shifts minimally due to changes in humidity, which creates tension. Before applying lubricants, it is important to check if the door is properly aligned and if the hinges are not under strain.
Installation quality also plays a role. Are the hinges tight enough but not too tight to allow movement? I recommend using a spirit level to verify if the doors hang straight. If not, adjust them first and then apply lubrication.
So, lubrication alone might mask the creaking to some extent but will not eliminate it permanently.
Thanks for your replies!
@angel & zarHenning: I will try using silicone oil but have one more question: Is there a difference between silicone oil and silicone spray? If so, which one is better suited for the BILLY door hinges?
@Curtis: Your tips on adjusting the alignment and tension of the door are helpful – the doors aren’t perfectly flush, so I will measure this carefully again. It’s quite possible that slight moisture has caused stresses that are responsible for the noise.
I will first correct the alignment and then carefully lubricate. Hopefully, this combination will help.

Keatondra11 Aug 2023 14:30Hello ADONKLO,
Both silicone oil and silicone spray are generally suitable for lubricating hinges. The main difference lies in their application: silicone spray disperses more evenly and penetrates tight gaps better, while silicone oil is a bit thicker and lasts longer, which can be beneficial under heavier loads.
For BILLY doors, I recommend the spray because it is cleaner to apply and doesn’t leave drops that could attract dust. It’s best to spray lightly, wait a moment, and then open and close the door several times.
Additionally, tightening the hinge screws a bit more can help if the creaking continues despite lubrication—as Curtis already mentioned, proper installation is important for trouble-free operation.
If you want to be sure, you can also use dry graphite powder, which doesn’t require an oil film—but it can be harder to apply cleanly.
Good luck with the repair! 🙂
