Hello everyone, I have noticed that the door of my Billy bookcase is increasingly sticking and hard to open. The door usually gets stuck near the top and can only be pushed open with a lot of force, which of course damages the material over time. My question is: What is an effective way to fix sticking Billy doors and make them easy to open again? Are there any specific adjustments or tricks that work without needing to dismantle the door? I have considered that the hinges might be warped or the door itself distorted, but I would appreciate any expert advice.

Usually, it helps to slightly loosen the eccentric screws on the hinges with a screwdriver and realign the door. That already sounds interesting. I suspect that these eccentric screws are exactly what I haven’t really paid attention to so far. Are these screws standard on Billy bookcases, or am I mistaken in my assumption? Also, I’m wondering whether you lift the door at the top or bottom while loosening the screws?
Hello marbu! Yes, the cam screws are standardly installed at the hinges on Billy shelves. They allow for fine adjustment of the door position relative to the cabinet. It’s best to place the shelf as level as possible on the floor, then you can carefully turn the screws with a screwdriver to release the door from a pinched position. Often, slightly lifting the door helps to prevent it from pressing against the cabinet. Important: Loosen the screws only slightly and adjust in small increments. Removing the door entirely makes it more complicated and is usually not necessary.

Simply adjusting the screws may fix the symptom but not the root cause. Careful alignment of the entire structure should be considered, as a door that remains stuck over time is often due to stress in the wood panel caused by moisture or load.
