Hello everyone, I hope there is someone here with experience: The drawer handles on my Ikea Malm dressers have broken off, and I’m wondering what the best solution is for this issue. Specifically, the plastic handles have broken right at the drawer front, so nothing holds properly anymore. The dressers aren’t very old, but the handles seem to be quite fragile. Does anyone have tips on whether the handles can be repaired, maybe with special adhesives or reinforcements? Or would it be better to replace them entirely – and if so, does anyone know of suitable replacement handles that are more durable and ideally easy to install? I’m also open to other solutions like internal reinforcements or modifications. Thanks in advance for any help!
Hello jabla,
I am familiar with this problem. The handles on Malm drawers are often the weak point because they are made of less durable plastic. For repairs, I recommend thoroughly cleaning the broken areas first and then using a special epoxy adhesive or two-component glue that cures very hard. You should secure or weigh down the handles so they stay in the correct position while the glue sets. However, if the areas are so brittle that gluing is no longer reliable, a complete replacement is often the better option.
For replacement handles, you can either order original spare parts from Ikea (these are usually sturdier than the installed handles but not much cheaper), or you can look for metal handles at hardware stores – these are a bit more expensive but add more stability to your dresser and also look more premium.
Another option, if you have some DIY skills, is to reinforce the handles from the inside using small wooden dowels or metal reinforcements. This significantly increases their lifespan. If you want, I can explain how to do this in more detail. Good luck!

The handles on the Malm drawers are indeed often the weak pointThat’s true, I had the same problem with my dresser, and it’s really frustrating. I was glad to read that there are different options, from gluing to reinforcing.
In my case, the handles kept breaking off even though I was very careful. Sometimes it was really annoying because I felt like I was constantly having to fix something.
I ended up installing metal handles myself and secured them with an additional small strip on the inside. This really helped, and they’ve been holding up without any issues for over a year now.
My advice: don’t give up and invest a bit more time into a sturdy alternative – it will save you stress and money in the long run. 🙂

Whether the handles can be repaired, perhaps with special adhesivesEpoxy resin adhesive is often the best choice for plastic breaks. In the long term, however, only a complete replacement or metal handles can provide a lasting solution.
Regarding broken Malm drawer handles: The original design of Ikea Malm drawers uses plastic handles that experience significant mechanical stress over time. Material fatigue causes breaks near the handle attachment points.
A permanent repair using adhesive is only partially effective because the stress points from pulling and pushing forces on the handles are very high. While epoxy resin adhesive provides a strong bond, the actual issue lies in how the handle is attached to the furniture.
Replacing the handles with metal alternatives, which are usually secured with screws and therefore more stable, is recommended. The existing drill holes are generally compatible, requiring minimal modifications for installation.
Additionally, internal reinforcement using small wooden strips or plastic plates can help distribute the load better and prevent future breaks.
In conclusion: adhesive repair is a short-term fix. In the long run, replacing the handles with more durable ones and reinforcing the drawer side is the proper solution. Newer models from the manufacturer often already feature more robust designs, emphasizing the value of this upgrade.
