Hello everyone,
we could have a laundry chute installed in the new house, but everyone advises against it. Most say that, compared to the benefit, it is simply too expensive. Should we listen to this advice, or what do you think?

And what if you like to hang your laundry outside? At the latest then, you end up walking anyway.

That’s always the case, no matter where the laundry area is located.

I see in my crystal ball a household without small children who need to be changed several times a day.

My children and foster children are adults now and have children of their own; so I know the implied meaning in your reply very well. When they were all little, the washer and dryer ran almost every day; at a certain age, you simply can’t dry clothes outside fast enough to keep up with the laundry demand.

What sense does it make to throw dirty laundry down to a lower floor where it was generated, only to carry it back up to the same place afterward?

I specifically added "for those who have the laundry room in the basement." If I were to build again, I would seriously consider placing the washer and dryer on the ground floor instead. But since we had to and wanted to build a basement because we are building on a slope, it wasn’t really an option for us.

In any case, I always have to carry the laundry around because I hang almost all of it to dry, and only towels go in the dryer. Whenever possible, I hang the laundry outside on the terrace or later on a rotary clothesline in the garden.

That perfectly matches our laundry and drying habits.
According to my wife, towels don’t stay as soft and fluffy when air-dried, so they go into the dryer.
The dryer only runs when the weather conditions don’t allow hanging the laundry outside or it’s too uncertain to leave clothes out when we’re away from home.

In my opinion, most houses do not have space on the ground floor or upper floor layouts to accommodate a washing machine and laundry area, as this often results in an 11cm (4.3 inches) children’s room or the bathroom being repurposed.

It’s all a matter of smart planning
