Happy New Year!

We are currently wondering about our old herringbone parquet flooring—whether we should oil the wood with natural oil after sanding off the old finish, or if it would be better to apply a protective lacquer instead.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of oiled parquet compared to lacquered parquet?

Thank you for your answers.

Hello everyone,
A wax oil would be a good choice; it provides a nice finish and protects the parquet floor long-term. Inevitable scratches and similar marks are barely noticeable on a wax oil treated surface, unlike on a lacquered surface.

Oiled/waxed surfaces can be relatively easily reworked with wax oil, whereas lacquered parquet would need to be sanded down.

It is important to ensure that no lacquer residues remain in the parquet, as this would negatively affect an oiled/waxed surface (for example, causing stains).

If you plan to have a professional refurbish your existing parquet, trust their advice; since they are responsible for their work, they will not recommend a surface treatment that would not provide a durable finish on your floor.
