ᐅ What should I do if my Billy shelf is wobbling even though it is attached to the wall?

Hello everyone, I have a Billy bookcase from IKEA that I have securely attached to the wall. However, it still noticeably wobbles, especially when I gently shake it. The fastening is done with the recommended plugs and screws, so it should be properly installed. My question is: What can I do if a Billy bookcase wobbles despite being fixed to the wall? Could it be due to the material, the assembly itself, or the wall? I am open to any advice, including what to check or possibly reinforce.

First, check if the wall plugs are properly seated and the screws are tightened. Thanks for the clear advice! The wall plugs seem to be firmly in place. The wall is solid concrete, not drywall, so it should be well-suited. I installed the screws with a firm torque. The back panel feels a bit loose. I will take a closer look.

Check whether the back panel is securely nailed or screwed and that there are no gaps. Is it possible to reinforce it with small nails or screws if needed? Or are there any specific tips for better back panel fastening?
You can easily secure the back panel with small nails. It’s best to use thin galvanized nails to prevent rusting. If the back panel is only fixed in a few places, it makes sense to nail it at intervals of 10–15 cm (4–6 inches). Alternatively, small screws can also be used—just pre-drill to avoid splitting the wood.

Is it possible to reinforce that later with small nails or screws? Yes, nails help, but if you want to further stiffen the back panel, you can install corner brackets. These almost always provide more stability against tipping.

The back panel feels a bit loose. This is often exactly the cause of wobbling. If the back panel does not rest evenly on all sides or is not fastened securely enough, the shelf loses its lateral stability.
Nailing it again is a good first step. For a permanently stable construction, I recommend attaching additional angle brackets to at least two shelves or the side panels in your case. This noticeably reduces wobbling, especially with shelves that carry heavy loads.

to attach additional angle brackets to at least two shelves or the side panels. Totally agree. These brackets are not an unnecessary gimmick but essential if the Billy wobbles. You just have to accept that you need to reinforce the standard furniture a bit. After that, the shelf usually stands rock solid 😉
