Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet doors, which keep getting stuck and don’t close properly. The doors feel like they are rubbing or catching somewhere, so I have to push them firmly to get them to close completely.

I have already tried adjusting the door hinges, but the problem persists. The doors are neither warped nor are the hinges loose. Sometimes it seems to be related to the magnetic strip or the door stop, but I’m not sure.

Does anyone have experience with this and can explain what exactly might be causing the issue with the Metod cabinet doors? And most importantly: what can I do to fix it? Which steps make sense and are there common mistakes to watch out for?

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

First, always clean the hinges thoroughly and check for any dirt or manufacturing residues. Then, slightly tighten the screws on the hinges, but do not overtighten.

If that doesn’t help, carefully check whether the door is rubbing directly against the frame or the seal, and adjust the hinges accordingly. This is often the cause.

This is a common recommendation, but I wouldn’t attribute the issue solely to mechanical adjustment. In some cases, the hinges or the attached magnetic strips may not be perfectly self-centering. The design concept of the Metod doors with magnetic closure allows for minimal tolerances, which can lead to deformation over time, for example due to moisture.

Therefore, my suggestion is: be sure to also check if the doors are warped by removing them and placing them against a flat surface. Only if warping can be ruled out does adjusting the hinges make sense.

It is also worth considering whether the load on the door is too high, for example due to heavy interior fittings that overload the hinges permanently.

To approach the problem systematically, I recommend the following steps:

- Remove the door: Take the affected door off its hinges (usually by loosening them) to inspect it separately from the furniture structure.
- Check for warping: Place the door on a flat, stable surface and use a ruler or spirit level to see if it sags or is bent in any area. A light test (shining light underneath the edge) can also help.
- Locate the rubbing point: Carefully run your hand or a thin strip of paper along the frame to find where the door is catching.
- Adjust the hinges: Metod hinges generally allow these adjustments: depth (in and out), height (up and down), and lateral shift (side to side). Try small corrections and rehang the door to test after each adjustment.
- Check the magnetic strips: If the magnetic catch is too strong in one spot, it can also cause the door to stick. These can be adjusted or slightly repositioned.

Common mistakes include overtightening the screws on the hinges, which can warp the mounting plate, or closing the door with excessive force, putting constant strain on it.

Conclusion: Only through a systematic approach can the exact cause be identified. If the door is warped, adjustments won’t be enough; then a repair or replacement is advised.
