Hello everyone, I have several Malm dressers from Ikea at home that unfortunately have become quite loud and squeaky when opening or closing the drawers. I’m interested in what would be the best way to eliminate this squeaking. Is there a specific type of lubricant recommended for this, or maybe technical details on how the drawer slides should be cleaned or treated to achieve a long-lasting quiet operation? I have some knowledge of furniture mechanics and would like to develop a durable solution because the noise is really annoying. Basement room temperatures or humidity might also have an influence, if anyone has experience with that. Thanks in advance for any tips!
Additionally, I can suggest applying soft wax (e.g., beeswax or furniture wax) to wooden parts that move against each other.
That is correct. If you live in particularly humid conditions, you should also consider sufficient ventilation to prevent swelling and shrinkage. You should not use silicone to treat squeaking wood, as it can damage the material.

Indoor humidity usually has little effect on metal rails but can affect wooden components

For metal rails, silicone spray is very effective. Alternatively, Teflon spray is also an option. For the wooden sliding surfaces on the underside of the drawers, a little furniture wax or candle wax helps. Simply apply it to a cloth, rub it flat, and then reinstall the drawers. This significantly reduces friction and noise.
In general, regular maintenance is better than just reacting to squeaking.

Hello, I’m happy to help and provide you with a detailed guide to fix squeaking noises in Malm dressers:
1. First, remove all the drawers completely.
2. Carefully check the runners and slides for dirt, dust, and old lubricant residues.
3. Clean them with a soft, lint-free cloth and isopropanol – this removes grease and old residues.
4. Then apply a suitable lubricant:
- For metal slides, silicone spray works best as it doesn’t stick or attract dust.
- For plastic rollers or sliding surfaces, a special plastic bearing grease or simply furniture wax can be used.
5. Reinsert the drawers and open/close them several times to distribute the lubricant evenly.
6. Additionally, be sure to check all screw connections and tighten them if necessary.
That is not necessary; simply removing the drawers is enough for basic cleaning and lubrication. If the squeaking persists, there might be mechanical damage.
I hope this helps! Feel free to ask if you have any questions 🙂

Are you wondering if you should completely disassemble the drawers?
