Hello everyone,

I recently got an IKEA Hemnes sideboard with several drawers and have noticed that while the drawers look nice, there is definitely room for improvement in terms of smooth operation and durability. So my question to the community is: What DIY tips do you know for specifically enhancing the functionality and lifespan of the Hemnes drawers?

I am thinking of solutions like better sliding systems, dampers, or internal fittings to make the drawers more stable or quieter. I’m also open to ideas on how to upgrade the handles or fronts if that can improve the overall user experience.

It’s important to me that the tips are relatively easy to implement—so nothing requiring special tools or complicated modifications. Do you have experience with alternative materials or special maintenance methods?

I look forward to your concrete suggestions and advice, ideally with a rough estimate of how much effort is involved. Thanks in advance for your support!

That’s an interesting question you’re raising. The HEMNES drawers are known to be made of solid wood and are relatively sturdy, but the drawer slides are usually the weak point when it comes to smooth operation and stability.

My tip: Instead of the original slides, you can install full-extension metal drawer slides yourself. These are not only more stable but also more durable and often come with soft-close dampers. However, you need to measure precisely and adjust the drill holes – this is not entirely straightforward.

Additionally, it’s worth replacing the handles with more ergonomic versions that make opening easier, which reduces wear over time. When it comes to dampers, avoid cheap plastic types and opt for metal ones with quality springs.

Although this involves more effort, it is worthwhile if you want to use the furniture piece for a longer time. What do you think about lining the inside of the drawers as well? Doesn’t that help reduce noise and also protect the wood?

A somewhat provocative question: Do the HEMNES drawers really need complicated modifications, or is the system actually fine for its price range as it is?

That sounds reasonable at first, but it is often overlooked that converting to full-extension slides not only requires effort but also changes the character of the furniture piece. Solid wood combined with metal slides doesn’t always fit together visually.

In addition, IKEA usually equips the HEMNES drawers with wooden runners, which can be very quiet when properly maintained.

My theory is that expectations regarding modifications and replacement parts are often too high. Simply applying beeswax or paraffin oil can work wonders, for example, if the drawers squeak.

Don’t you sometimes get the feeling that small issues turn into big projects? Maybe a little maintenance is enough instead of jumping straight into technical modifications.

Brief and to the point:

- Treat drawer slides with wax or silicone spray
- Attach soft felt pads to the drawer sides to protect the wood
- Avoid overloading drawers to reduce wear
- If needed, install softer, modern handles that are more comfortable to grip

No major renovation required; simple measures are often sufficient.

In addition to the previous posts: The HEMNES drawers use a classic wooden slide system, which works for their dimensions and load capacity, but naturally offers limited smoothness.

Therefore, I recommend the following systematic approach for improvement:

- Inspect the drawer runners for damage. Smooth out small irregularities or worn spots to prevent sticking.

- Use high-quality silicone spray or beeswax for lubrication. Both significantly reduce friction noise without leaving residues.

- Install soft-close dampers specifically designed for wooden slides. These are available as retrofit kits and prevent abrupt slamming and denting.

- For the drawer interior, thin cork or felt pads can help reduce rattling caused by movement inside the drawer.

- For tools and heavy items, stability can be improved by adding additional strips to the inside side walls.

The measures listed above can be carried out with average DIY skills and do not require special tools. Converting to full-extension slides is possible but more complex, requiring precise measurements and possibly altering the wooden fronts.

Recommendation: Focus on maintenance and targeted upgrades. This increases comfort and durability without changing the style.
