Hello everyone,
I have been experiencing some issues with the drawer slides on my Ikea Hemnes sideboard for a while. Despite careful assembly, some drawers stick when opening and closing, and the slides feel somewhat stiff or unevenly loaded. I suspect there might be either an incorrect adjustment or a mechanical inaccuracy that Ikea hasn’t fully resolved.
I’m wondering if there are any DIY solutions or tips in this forum to optimize or repair the drawer slides on Hemnes furniture? I’m especially interested in experiences on how to fix common problems like sticking drawers, squeaky running noises, or worn-out rails without having to replace the slides entirely.
Are there any specific materials, tools (e.g., lubricants, pads), or precise adjustment methods that have proven effective?
Looking forward to your helpful advice and experiences!

Here are a few notes on lubrication:
- Using PTFE spray is actually the best method. Oil or grease will only attract dust and dirt.
- Clean the rails with isopropanol before spraying to ensure longer-lasting effect.
- Follow the lubricant manufacturer's instructions carefully.
If the guides squeak or stick, it could also be due to a foreign particle lodged inside – be sure to check thoroughly after removal.

Check the load capacity of the rollers. If they are heavily worn on one side, this will cause improper guidance. This is an important point. I would also recommend inspecting the rollers for cracks or severe deformations. For some Hemnes models, replacement rollers are available at a reasonable price if a roller is damaged.

Careful and repeated removal and reinstallation, along with thorough inspections, prevents the need to replace the guides too soon.Exactly. The drawer slides are sturdy but require proper maintenance. Only then will they remain functional for a long time.

If the Hemnes drawers no longer slide smoothly, you can use thin foam rubber strips instead of paper or felt. These are flexible and act as a cushion against uneven pressure.
Additionally, it helps not to tighten the screws of the transition profiles too much, so the rails remain slightly movable and don’t get stuck.
Of course, you should try this on one drawer first and then apply it to the others.

Sometimes this is the simplest solution when complete cleaning and lubrication do not produce any results. That’s true; however, it is always advisable to carefully verify beforehand that the choice of drawer slides truly matches the Hemnes furniture model. IKEA sometimes offers slight variations, and what appears to be a defect can often be caused by ordering the wrong slides.
Two final tips from me:
- When installing, be sure to ensure the slides are aligned without any offset.
- When sliding the drawer in, lift it slightly so the rollers engage smoothly.
This way, many issues can be resolved without needing to replace parts.
