Hello everyone, I’m currently thinking about how to customize and creatively enhance IKEA Hemnes furniture. The series has a classic design, but I find it a bit plain for my taste. My question is: What specific DIY ideas are there to make Hemnes furniture more attractive or modern without compromising functionality? I’m especially interested in solutions that are manageable in terms of effort, such as through color design, mixing materials, or small craftsmanship changes. Maybe you also have tips on how to renew surfaces, replace fittings, or add details. I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!

Replace handles and use chalk paint. That’s a classic, quick solution.

That might work, but doesn’t it raise the question of whether chalk paint can permanently seal the surface? Especially Hemnes is often lacquered, which makes chipping or scratching a risk. An alternative would be to use spray paint combined with a clear protective coat to improve durability. Also, the final look should be assessed not only visually but also by touch. Without sealing, chalk paint feels rough.

So, it’s important to consider whether the effort and materials used are really suitable for the intended purpose.

I find it really exciting how versatile Hemnes can be upcycled! For me, adding nice leather handles made a big difference, along with a few colorful, matte paint shades on the surface. It really gives the whole piece of furniture a lot of character! Just give it a try and enjoy the process – that's what makes the difference 🙂

For painting Hemnes furniture, the following steps are recommended:

- Thoroughly sand the surface with fine sandpaper (grit 220-240) to improve adhesion.
- Use a primer specifically designed for painted wood surfaces, as Hemnes is usually pre-coated.
- Then apply thin layers of acrylic paint or chalk paint in multiple coats, sanding lightly between each layer.

For handles, I recommend checking the drilling measurements before purchase, as Hemnes has varying hole distances. Replacement handles made of metal or leather are both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

This is a professionally sound method for a long-lasting finish without compromising quality.

What about you? What kind of furniture do you use exactly – dresser, wardrobe, or shelving unit?

Good question – I mostly have two dressers and a large Hemnes bookshelf. I want to keep the dressers modern and clean, while the bookshelf can be a bit more playful with color accents and lighting.

Regarding materials, I aim to work as sustainably as possible, so I want to avoid harsh chemicals. I think a combination of natural oils, matte paints, and changing the handles could be a good foundation. I also find the tip about using adhesive films inside the shelf very interesting. Thanks to everyone for the helpful suggestions!
