Hello everyone, I’m currently thinking about how to customize and creatively enhance IKEA Hemnes furniture. The series has a classic design, but I find it a bit plain for my taste. My question is: What specific DIY ideas are there to make Hemnes furniture more attractive or modern without compromising functionality? I’m especially interested in solutions that are manageable in terms of effort, such as through color design, mixing materials, or small craftsmanship changes. Maybe you also have tips on how to renew surfaces, replace fittings, or add details. I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!

To effectively enhance Hemnes furniture, I recommend the following approaches: - Sanding and repainting with acrylic paint or chalk paint for a matte finish that looks very modern. - Replacing the original handles with high-quality brass or leather handles for an elegant touch. - Applying wallpaper or adhesive films to the back panels of the furniture to create contrast, especially in display cabinets or shelves. - Installing LED light strips under the shelves to upgrade the interior spaces. These measures do not require advanced workshop skills and clearly improve both appearance and functionality.

I simply painted my Hemnes dresser with chalk paint and installed new wooden handles. Very simple, but it looks much more high-quality.

Hello, I think upgrading the Hemnes shelf with additional shelves made of glass or wood, which can be individually painted, is definitely worthwhile. This significantly increases the design options. If you are somewhat skilled in DIY, you can also lightly sand the furniture surfaces and seal them with furniture wax for a refined feel. Additionally, custom contact paper coverings are recommended, as they can be easily removed if you want to change the style later. It is important to clean the surface thoroughly and test how well the paint or paper adheres beforehand. If you have any questions, I am happy to help.

Replace the handles and use chalk paint. This is a classic, quick solution.

I would like to expand on this idea: When choosing wallpaper with high-quality patterns or self-adhesive decorative films, it is important to ensure that the adhesive surface is perfectly smooth and dust-free. Otherwise, air bubbles or unevenness can occur, which reduce the effect. Another tip: For furniture that is frequently moved during use, it is advisable to use film that can be removed without leaving any residue to avoid damaging the finish. Additionally, antiquing effects can be achieved by adding color pigments to the finish or using targeted wiping techniques, giving the furniture more character. Veneered overlays or decorative moldings that can be attached yourself are also interesting options to emphasize edges without changing the furniture’s structure. What about you—what type of furniture do you use exactly, dresser, cabinet, or shelving?
