JangauGood morning everyone, I hope you’re all having a great start to the day! I’m interested in customizing the Ikea Brimnes system and would like to know: What DIY ideas or projects exist to enhance the BRIMNES shelving unit both effectively and aesthetically? I’m especially curious about options that don’t require complex carpentry but still make a significant difference—whether in terms of color, functionality, or design. Perhaps you have creative tips for painting, new handles, built-in additions, or clever modifications? How do you make sure the piece doesn’t look like a standard Ikea product but feels truly personal? Thank you for sharing your experiences and suggestions!
Hey Jangau, great topic! The BRIMNES is really an excellent starting point for DIY projects because the surfaces are so smooth. I once covered my dresser with film – it creates really cool effects, especially with wood or marble finishes! 😍 Changing the handles is also an easy step; brass handles work best, they look really elegant. And if you feel like it, you can even screw on casters to make it easier to move – super practical! ✨ It’s worth preparing the whole thing with colorful chalk paint or Moltofill to create a new surface before getting creative. Have fun crafting, it’s really enjoyable!
Oh yes, applying a film is a real insider tip! 😎 I once painted a BRIMNES with chalkboard paint, which looked really cool—especially if you have kids or a lot of paperwork on your desk. And by using magnetic paint under the chalkboard paint, you can even add Post-It holders! Just make sure to sand thoroughly and apply a primer so it sticks properly. For the handles, I crafted unique alternatives from old keys—totally personal and giving a cool vintage touch if that’s your style. 😉 Also, a bit of LED lighting on the back panel really enhances the look. Just add an LED strip, and the furniture instantly feels fresh and modern.

Many users replace the doors or drawer fronts with custom-made or self-designed panels made of multiplex plywood or coated MDF. This creates a significantly higher-quality, tailored appearance. For surface finishing, I recommend professional water-based spray paints, as they are durable and environmentally friendly. To enhance functionality, you can add additional interior fittings – such as pull-out inserts, drawer dividers, or homemade organizers. These often fit very well and greatly improve usability without negatively affecting the overall look.

Why bother modifying a mass-produced product like the BRIMNES? The look always ends up feeling half-hearted and never as perfect as a piece of furniture made by a professional cabinetmaker. Sure, a bit of paint or new handles here and there is nice, but in the end, it’s always a patchwork that at best reflects your own creativity, but doesn’t really lead to high furniture quality. The illusion of individuality at the expense of standard IKEA products – that doesn’t appeal to me. Still, it’s interesting to see what you all are doing.
