Hello everyone,
I am planning to customize my IKEA Platsa furniture a bit more uniquely and am looking for good DIY ideas that go beyond the usual paint jobs. Specifically, I am interested in suggestions for functional modifications, smart organization systems, or visual customizations that can be implemented technically without completely compromising the modular features of the Platsa range.
Has anyone in this forum already completed projects with Platsa and can offer tips on materials or methods that are especially practical or durable? Maybe small adjustments for specific use cases like a home office, media furniture, or hallway storage?
I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!

A factual addition: Anyone wanting to ensure the stability of Platsa furniture while customizing it should pay close attention to material choices. That is an important point, especially considering the extra load from technical equipment. Are there possibly prefabricated mounting components available that can be used cost-effectively? Or is custom-built construction using aluminum profiles the better option?
I also find your idea regarding magnetic catches interesting, particularly in terms of flexibility. It would be useful to know which models have proven reliable and how the installation works. Thanks in advance for the tips!
I have been extensively working on DIY modifications of modular IKEA furniture, including Platsa. Some of my projects have been quite complex, so here are a few tips:
- If you want to reinforce with aluminum profiles, it’s best to choose T-slot profiles. They offer high flexibility through assembly with special connectors.
- For interior divisions, combinations of multiple materials work best: MDF panels as partitions, combined with acrylic glass or melamine panels for the appearance.
- Cable management is often underestimated. I always build additional channels along the edges to allow quick access to the cables when needed. This should always be done with some distance from electronic devices to avoid impairing heat dissipation.
- When adjusting fronts and doors, make sure to replace hinges with adjustable models if necessary. This allows you to quickly compensate for misalignments and reduces the need for rework later.
- For painting: Always prime with an adhesion primer, otherwise paint often adheres poorly to melamine surfaces.
If you like, I can prepare a material list for you.

Hello,
I have had good experiences extending Platsa furniture with custom-made, removable drawers made from lightweight plywood. The drawers can be precisely tailored to the existing internal dimensions. This keeps everything modular and provides great flexibility in use.
Installing LED strip backlighting, hidden behind the shelves, is also a great idea that I have implemented myself. It not only enhances the appearance but also improves visibility and organization.
If the original legs are too low for you, adjustable metal furniture feet are an easy way to visually upgrade the furniture and better adapt it to the room conditions.
In general, I recommend always considering modularity and possible changes during transport, and making modifications reversible.
