Hello everyone,

I recently realized that some replacement parts are needed for my Ikea Brimnes bed, which unfortunately are not always easy to buy or can quickly become expensive. Therefore, I’m interested in knowing: What DIY alternatives exist for Ikea Brimnes replacement parts? Specifically, I mean things like damaged slatted bed bases, replacements for defective hinges or handles, as well as recreating shelves. I’m interested in both materials and practical building instructions or sources for compatible standard parts. Who has experience or tips on how to make typical Brimnes replacement parts yourself or reproduce them affordably without completely losing the original Ikea design and functionality? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Slatted frame: Beech slats with a cross-section of 15x40 mm (0.6x1.6 inches), spaced 40 cm (16 inches) apart, glued and screwed. Hinges: Folding fittings opening at 90 degrees, simply measure and buy replacements. Handles: New handles made of wood or metal can be customized individually.

As an addition: For the slatted bed bases, I highly recommend solid beech wood slats, as this wood offers an optimal balance of strength and flexibility. Ensure the material has low moisture content (below 12%) to prevent warping.

When replicating the hinges, precisely fitting piano hinges or special cup hinges with similar dimensions are a good alternative. For Ikea-specific installation dimensions, it is advisable to use a precision tape measure to determine the exact drilling pattern spacing.

For installation: Before drilling into the furniture parts, be sure to create a marking template to guarantee precise fitting.

This approach ensures a durable and secure long-term solution.

One more note about the hinges:

Ikea often uses cup hinges, which are generally compatible with standard furniture hinges.

However, if the original hinges are no longer available, it is often worthwhile to measure old, damaged hinges and contact specialized furniture fitting manufacturers who can produce custom replacements or offer suitable alternatives.

Additionally, self-drawn component drawings and precise measurements significantly help in selecting appropriate replacement parts.

Regarding handles, I recommend solid wood handles made from beech or oak, which can be easily installed using suitable wood glue and screws.

Shelves can be made from 15 to 18 mm (0.6 to 0.7 inch) MDF or plywood panels coated with melamine foil. This coating provides a high surface hardness and is cost-effective, available at most hardware stores.

For slatted bed bases and hinges, I advise always choosing durable materials and precise dimensions, as these components are subject to significant structural stress. Accurate measurements are essential.

If you are inexperienced, I suggest making a template for marking the drill holes to avoid mistakes.
