Hello everyone,

I wanted to ask the community about common difficulties encountered when assembling the IKEA Hemnes beds. I have put together several IKEA furniture items before, but this particular bed is causing me some trouble because, in my opinion, the instructions are not always completely clear. I am especially interested in problems that may arise when assembling the different bed sizes, as well as mechanical aspects like installing the slatted bed bases and the stability after assembly. Knowing about any unusual tools or additional steps not directly mentioned in the instructions would also be helpful.

I look forward to your experiences and tips!

Hello Matthias36,

to address your question in detail, here is a step-by-step list of challenges I identified during several Hemnes bed assemblies:

- Wooden dowels: The dowel holes are often a bit tight, so it is advisable to gently sand them with sandpaper to avoid splitting.

- Screws and brackets: The included screws are standardized, but the bracket fittings require precise alignment due to their design – a misaligned installation reduces stability.

- Slatted bed base installation: In my experience, the correct positioning of the slatted bed base supports is crucial despite the instructions, as small inaccuracies can later cause creaking noises under load.

- Wood warping: The solid wood used can slightly react to moisture – therefore, I recommend assembling in a room with stable humidity and ensuring that the wood parts do not rest on cold floors.

- Instructions: The illustrations are often quite schematic, so a closer look at the shape of the parts and their fit is inevitable.

Are there specific steps where you are having difficulties? Sometimes carefully analyzing the problem areas helps.

Thank you for the detailed response, kibutar! I actually noticed when fitting the side panels that some of the holes are too tight, making it almost impossible to insert the wooden dowels without causing damage. Additionally, I’m having trouble aligning the back panel precisely because the bed ends up slightly crooked after the initial assembly.

This explains why some parts creak and wobble despite tightening all the screws according to the instructions.

Is there a technique to slightly enlarge the dowel holes without causing gaps or damage? And how can I ensure the bed stands perfectly straight during assembly?

Hello Matthias36,

it's great that you provided more details about the issue. For the dowel holes, I recommend using a fine file or sandpaper to carefully and minimally widen the holes—preferably in small increments. Make sure to remove the wood dust after each round so the dowels fit more easily.

To ensure proper alignment, build the bed on as flat a surface as possible and use a spirit level while tightening the screws to check that all sides are flush. It also helps to initially screw the parts together just finger-tight and only fully tighten them at the end, allowing for slight adjustments to the material.

If possible, get some help with aligning the parts—two people can better hold and control the pieces during assembly.
