ᐅ What features did you include in your house, and what did you decide to leave out?

Hello,

When planning and building a house, you focus on the essentials and the budget. Some wishes get dropped along the way. But certain small luxuries or nice features are important to you, even if they are not strictly necessary, and you end up including them anyway.

For us, a heated conservatory was an unattainable dream. However, we treated ourselves to tiled, walk-in showers, even though they take up more space.

I would love to hear what you have given up and what you managed to include.

Best regards

Hey, for a walk-in shower like this with a glass door in front, the plumber offers a Kermi Nova 2000 real glass pivot door, 90cm (35 inches) wide, 1.85m (6 ft 1 in) high, silver aluminum frame, 700 (gross, including installation). Is that okay? Should I go for it or better check local hardware stores and ask a handyman service for installation? Karsten

Go all in. That way, everything is finished at once, and you don’t have to have someone else come later and make a mess.

It's rather expensive. For plumbing on a 2 x 2 m (6.6 x 6.6 ft) wall plus a 1.20 m (4 ft) wall including a sliding door, we just paid 1700. The brand is Breuer.

If you look online, the door costs about €250 plus installation service around €400, of which over €300 is just the fixed travel fee nationwide in Germany. Plumbing, as usual.

I made a typo earlier, the product is called Kermi Ibiza. Reuter offers it for 439 without installation, while a seller on eBay charges 399 without installation but adds 20 for shipping, so that’s almost the same price as Reuter. My plumber wants 700 including installation, gross. I don’t think that’s very cheap, but it would be the most convenient solution. I need to think it over again. My wife would prefer to leave the niche empty for now because any glass door always needs cleaning, and she doesn’t like that. She’s considering a PVC curtain from the Danish furniture store; if it gets dirty, you just replace it, and it only costs 12.75. It’s something worth considering, based on what she says. Karsten

Karsten, your tendency to be economical is understandable, but if you now hang a €10 plastic curtain in front of the walk-in shower, you might as well move into a youth hostel. This is no longer frugality but self-punishment.

P.S.: Moldy curtains can be washed and will look like new afterward. However, after 3-4 washes, they wear out and the water repellent treatment is gone.
