ᐅ What features did you include in your house, and what did you decide to leave out?

Hello,

When planning and building a house, you focus on the essentials and the budget. Some wishes get dropped along the way. But certain small luxuries or nice features are important to you, even if they are not strictly necessary, and you end up including them anyway.

For us, a heated conservatory was an unattainable dream. However, we treated ourselves to tiled, walk-in showers, even though they take up more space.

I would love to hear what you have given up and what you managed to include.

Best regards

The edge is intentional. It is only 2 mm (0.08 inches). The trim is anthracite; it matches our kitchen, front door, window sills, and switch series.

@maniac: Respect! Really great... definitely a lot of planning involved. We ourselves are building at a high cost (over 800,000) and I think we earn very well. But I wonder what kind of income/equity is needed for over 2,000,000.

@Vitalio Ah, okay, if the anthracite matches the kitchen and so on, then that’s nice. But why was the 2mm (0.08 inches) edge chosen? I wouldn’t have wanted that. Good luck.

This is a small chamfer to prevent the edge from being too sharp. This is a standard wooden molding that is painted; it can also be made without a chamfer.

@Vitalio Thanks. Very nice.

@BeHaElJa Everyone enjoys the extras they can afford. A skylight in the bathroom is really nice. It lets in a completely different kind of light compared to a regular window.

A little off-topic: Anyone who can afford their own house is already better off than many others. What difference does it make whether someone has 80 m² (860 ft²) or 500 m² (5,380 ft²) when compared to someone who doesn't even have a roof over their head, enough to eat, or health insurance?

What I treated myself to might be considered standard by some, but oh well.

What I treated myself to:

- Underfloor heating (yes, I know this is pretty standard nowadays, but some in the development opted out)
- Fully electric roller shutters (same as with the underfloor heating)
- Basement made of waterproof concrete (WU concrete), which some also left out
- 9-meter (30 feet) long garage (unfortunately, no more is allowed)
- Two full stories plus sloped ceilings in the attic starting at about 1.20m (4 feet) and finished attic space (hip roof)
- Floor-level shower in the bathroom (probably nothing special nowadays either)
- The back of the house is almost entirely made of windows (who’s going to clean them? Not me)
- A partial gallery on the upper floor (this actually reduced the price somewhat by leaving out a room)
- A Bora cooktop in the kitchen
- About a 5-minute drive to the A3 highway in the Ruhr area

What I am missing:

- It would be nicer to have a detached single-family house; I have “only” a semi-detached home
- My plot is small, but land and big city don’t really go well together like in the countryside
- A double garage
- A carport in front of the garage
