ᐅ What features did you include in your house, and what did you decide to leave out?

Hello,

When planning and building a house, you focus on the essentials and the budget. Some wishes get dropped along the way. But certain small luxuries or nice features are important to you, even if they are not strictly necessary, and you end up including them anyway.

For us, a heated conservatory was an unattainable dream. However, we treated ourselves to tiled, walk-in showers, even though they take up more space.

I would love to hear what you have given up and what you managed to include.

Best regards

Oh yes, 19 m² (205 ft²) is a nice size. You can fit a bed and desk and still have floor space for a model train or similar. A 12 m² (129 ft²) technical room is good; we only have 10 m² (108 ft²), without laundry facilities. (Laundry is upstairs.)

We do the same, washing on the upper floor. Maybe that can count as a little luxury.

I hope washing on the upper floor works out well. The laundry room also has the large utility sink. Maybe it would have been better to have it on the ground floor since you actually have to carry big, dirty items you want to clean up the stairs (which, in our case, also don’t have a landing). However, my husband offered me this week to install a small utility sink next to the door in the utility room. There just happens to be enough space next to the first connections. That way, I can clean dirty shoes or similar items there.

We don’t have anything like that, but so far we haven’t missed it. We didn’t have it at my parents’ place either, and to be honest, this is the first time I’m hearing about something like that. I usually clean shoes outside anyway, and for dirty clothes, we do the same as we used to with our daughter’s occasionally very dirty clothes from daycare: put them in a bag and then dump them into the washing machine.

We are treating ourselves to:
  • a good location for the plot
  • a larger plot than necessary
  • full ceiling height on the south side
  • quiet air source heat pump (outdoor unit) + multifunction storage tank
  • an additional 35 m² (380 sq ft) of usable space in the attic
  • lots of cellar substitute space
  • 4-panel lift-and-slide door with external blinds
  • worry-free financing
  • carport
  • possibly photovoltaic system
  • the best architect
  • large bathroom
  • large children's room

We are giving up:
  • single-family house
  • fireplace and chimney
  • basement
  • possibly garage
  • colored window frames
  • dormer
  • roller shutters everywhere
  • modern gimmicks
  • large bedroom
  • KfW 70 (energy efficiency standard)

I’m familiar with air source heat pumps; we have one as well, also installed outdoors. Horizontal rotor? My husband just mentioned we also have a multifunction storage tank.

Expanding the attic wasn’t an option for us. That was the topic of our longest discussion. It’s been completely ruled out since we would have had a hard time allocating space for a permanent staircase up there. Did you include a permanent staircase right away, or just an attic hatch with a pull-out ladder at first?

Single-family house?? I’m really confused. Single-family house??? What is it exactly, a semi-detached house?
