ᐅ What features did you include in your house, and what did you decide to leave out?

Hello,

When planning and building a house, you focus on the essentials and the budget. Some wishes get dropped along the way. But certain small luxuries or nice features are important to you, even if they are not strictly necessary, and you end up including them anyway.

For us, a heated conservatory was an unattainable dream. However, we treated ourselves to tiled, walk-in showers, even though they take up more space.

I would love to hear what you have given up and what you managed to include.

Best regards

This is how it looks... and for me, this fulfills the function of a roller shutter: providing shading and basic burglary protection.

Since we’re talking about electric roller shutters... Costs? We visited a window installer after being quoted an extra 200€ per roller shutter. The window installer just smiled and said that this small motor doesn’t even cost 50€ :/

Well, it depends on what you want... my motors alone cost 300 each, plus electrification and adapters for the shaft, etc., so about 350 per window.

If you use the simplest motors (and yes, they do work), you can get by with 50 plus adapter and electrification.

So depending on what the window manufacturer installs, 200 can be a fair price... it usually also includes programming the endpoints and so on, which is all labor time that needs to be paid for.

@ Bauexperte: Great post. Our construction project won't start until spring, but I think very few projects run completely without issues. After all, this isn’t manufacturing a Swiss watch. What really matters is how people treat each other and resolve problems. We have also chosen to work with a construction consultant and hope this proves to be a good decision.

Sorry @Mycraft, I must have mixed up the nicknames.

I also have it on my list, so you didn’t really make a mistake.

Something I forgot to mention:

- Stair steps illuminated with spotlights set into the walls

What we didn’t go for:
- Rainwater cistern

However, we had the terrace and entrance area covered with gravel right away. Later, only fine gravel needs to be added, and then paving can start. We’re still undecided whether we’ll have a wooden deck or not. We’ll see.

Didn’t allow yourselves???? For us, that expensive thing was mandatory.

After reading the 1000 pages here and living in the house for a year, I’ve realized quite a few things that weren’t really part of the initial planning of our house, but that we now have:

Garage
Office/gym/guest room on the ground floor (for later in life)
Very expensive drain channel in the walk-in shower. Very expensive mosaic tiles on the end wall of the shower
Hidden cloakroom
Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, underfloor heating, and a fireplace
Open living room extending up to the roof gable
Gallery
Staircase from the living room
Natural stone wall
Utility room with fitted kitchen unit
Steam oven + kitchen island
13 sqm (140 sq ft) of window area in living/dining
Roller shutters on the ground floor
Utility room on the upper floor
Walk-in closet
Two terrace levels with raised bed made of slate
Second outdoor faucet
