We are undecided and would like to hear some opinions and experiences from fireplace owners, as a fireplace is quite a significant investment.

How much work does a fireplace actually require? Cleaning, for example. Does a three-sided fireplace still look nice even when not in use?

Approximately how much do you spend annually on chimney sweep services, wood, fire starters, etc.?

How often do you use your fireplace each year?

Note: We would use our fireplace purely for enjoyment, not for heating.

Thank you for all tips and advice.

For us:
Chimney 5,000 Euro
Stove 2,500 Euro
Small parts, fireplace tools 100 Euro
Inspection by the chimney sweep around 80 Euro

Ongoing costs
2 x 30 Euro chimney sweep per year
? Euro fireplace inspection every 2–5? years? We haven’t had one yet.
1 cubic meter of beech wood 90–100 Euro from the local firewood supplier, including delivery

We have deliberately decided against having a stove or fireplace.
A) Because of the dirt that inevitably accumulates in the living room.
B) Additional construction costs including the stove of at least 5000€ (about $5,400).
C) We don’t have a forest, so we would have to buy the wood, which makes it not worthwhile for us to occasionally light the stove.
