Hello everyone, I am currently renovating my IKEA Platsa cabinets and would like to know: Which paint is best suited for painting the wood of PLATSA? My goal is for the paint to not only adhere well but also be durable and both aesthetically pleasing and functional. It is also important for me to know if any special preparations should be made before painting and if there are specific types of paint that work best with this surface. I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Hello Thomasdan, that’s an interesting question that many aspiring DIY enthusiasts wonder about. The surface of PLATSA is made of melamine-coated wood, which is a bit more challenging to paint than solid wood because the melamine coating is very smooth and durable. To ensure good adhesion, I recommend the following steps:

- Lightly sand the wood before painting, preferably with fine sandpaper (grit 220 or higher) to help the paint adhere better.
- Then thoroughly dust and degrease the surface to prevent dirt or grease from interfering with adhesion.
- For priming, use an adhesion primer designed specifically for smooth surfaces or plastics.
- When choosing paint, acrylic paints or special furniture and synthetic resin paints work best. They are resistant to abrasion and light moisture.
- Water-based acrylic lacquers are especially recommended, as they also make untreated surfaces waterproof.

My recommendation is to use a high-quality acrylic or synthetic resin paint with a matte or satin finish. Avoid very glossy paints, as they tend to show scratches more easily and can make the surface look artificial.

May I ask if the cabinets will be located in heavily used rooms such as the kitchen or bathroom? That can definitely affect the choice of paint and lacquer.

Exactly, that sums it up well. I would also add that when choosing paint, it’s essential to select one that remains flexible to prevent cracking or chipping over time.

If durability is important to you, acrylic-based paints are definitely the better option. I personally treated PLATSA with a two-component lacquer, though it was more labor-intensive. For many, a good acrylic paint finish is completely sufficient.

Another important point: allow enough drying time between coats and ideally work in a dust-free environment. This helps avoid uneven surfaces and imperfections.

Do you have preferred color shades, or would you rather go for something more neutral that fits various interior styles?

Acrylic paint in white or light gray is best. Sand the surface first and apply a primer with good adhesion; this ensures long-lasting durability and a clean appearance.

Good question, the cabinets are in my living room, so more of a moderately used area. There is some sunlight exposure, but no direct moisture like in the bathroom or kitchen. The color should be light, preferably timeless and easy to maintain.

Exactly, I’m leaning towards neutral colors like white, cream, or light gray. However, I’m also open to advice on which tones work particularly well for PLATSA, especially regarding durability and surface type.

To find the ideal paint color for your IKEA PLATSA cabinets, I would recommend considering the following points:

- Melamine surfaces are very smooth and should therefore be thoroughly sanded to prevent adhesion problems.
- A special primer suitable for smooth surfaces is essential. This greatly increases the durability of the paint.
- For color selection, water-based acrylic paints with a matte or satin finish are recommended. These are not only easy to maintain but also retain their appearance longer and are more environmentally friendly.
- In terms of color, light and neutral tones such as white, ivory, or light gray naturally work well with PLATSA, as they emphasize modularity and the clean style.
- An important tip: test the paint on a small, inconspicuous area so you can check both adhesion and color tone under your lighting conditions.

By following this approach, you will achieve a professional finish that will remain impressive for years to come.
