Hello everyone,

I recently purchased an Ikea Besta sideboard with a high-gloss finish and am now facing the challenge of cleaning the shiny fronts properly without causing damage or leaving unattractive streaks. I’m interested in any cleaning tips and methods you recommend specifically for this type of high-gloss furniture, especially which products and techniques work best to remove fingerprints, dust, and light dirt. Are there any home remedies that have proven effective, or is it better to use specialized products? And how do you deal with stubborn stains? I would appreciate your experiences and advice!

For Ikea BESTA high-gloss surfaces, simply use a microfiber cloth with mild dish soap and water. Do not use harsh cleaners or abrasive materials. After wiping, dry immediately to prevent water spots.

Hello amosgi,

I completely understand that you want to be especially careful with high-gloss surfaces, as small scratches or streaks are very noticeable. In general, I recommend the following approach:

- Always use a soft microfiber cloth to gently and effectively pick up dust.
- For cleaning, mix a few drops of mild dish soap with lukewarm water.
- Wipe the surface gently without applying too much pressure.
- Then dry with a clean, dry microfiber cloth to prevent streaks.

If fingerprints are really stubborn, you can try using a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a microfiber cloth – but do not spray directly onto the furniture and test carefully first. Avoid abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals, as they can damage the high-gloss finish or cause it to appear dull.

Very important: Avoid cleaning in direct sunlight, as sunlight can make the cleaning process harder and streaks more visible.

I hope this helps you!

I share the same view, but I would also question why high-gloss surfaces are chosen at all if such intensive maintenance is required. High-gloss looks great initially but is very prone to stains and scratches in everyday use.

Perhaps it makes more sense to focus on low-maintenance surface finishes instead of constantly dealing with cleaning.

Regarding cleaning itself: Never use harsh chemicals. I have also had good experiences with glass cleaners when they are mild – but please use sparingly, otherwise the finish will become dull.

For cleaning Ikea BESTA high-gloss surfaces, I recommend a structured approach:

- Avoid any aggressive or abrasive cleaning agents that could damage the surface.
- Preferably use distilled water or a mild dish soap solution with soft microfiber cloths.
- For oily or greasy stains, a small amount of isopropyl alcohol solution (denatured alcohol) used only spot-wise is recommended.
- Immediately dry the surfaces after cleaning to prevent water spots.

It is also important to follow Ikea’s manufacturer guidelines to avoid voiding warranty claims. If stains are particularly stubborn, avoid applying mechanical pressure, as high-gloss coatings are sensitive to scratches.

Regular and gentle maintenance prolongs the lifespan and keeps the surface visually appealing.

Hello amosgi,

I completely understand your concern about high-gloss surfaces – they can be real diva furniture! 😄 For me, the secret is a good old microfiber cloth and plenty of patience. Fingerprints disappear after wiping as long as I don’t use too much water (no more than a splash in the bucket!) and dry immediately.

Oh, and a little secret weapon: some people swear by special furniture polish for high-gloss finishes (not wax, more like anti-fingerprint products), but I stick to water and dish soap to avoid overloading the surface.

The important thing is to always be gentle, the surface is more delicate than I expected. And if you just got it fresh – enjoy the shine, the effort is worth it!
