Hello everyone, some time ago I bought a few BILLY shelves from IKEA, including some made of wood. I want to take good care of these shelves and am looking for effective but gentle cleaning tips that won’t damage the wood or the surface.
In particular, I’m interested in which cleaning products you recommend, how often the shelves should be cleaned, and whether there are any special accessories that are useful for this type of furniture. Tips for removing stubborn stains or dust without causing scratches or dull spots would also be helpful.
Does anyone know if there are differences in care depending on the type of wood used in the BILLY shelves? I look forward to well-founded advice or personal experiences, thanks in advance!

Hey, this is a great topic! 🙂 I have several BILLY wooden shelves myself and maintain them regularly.
What I do: Just use a damp microfiber cloth—not soaking wet!—with mild dish soap in lukewarm water. This effectively removes dust and keeps the wood in good condition.
Yes, that’s important! Avoid harsh cleaners on solid wood or veneered surfaces, as they can damage the finish.
If there are stains, a mix of water and a little vinegar often works, but be sure to test it on a hidden spot first!
Good luck with cleaning! 🙂

I would like to point out some technical details regarding the cleaning of BILLY wooden shelves that are often overlooked but quite important.
First, it is essential to distinguish whether the shelves are made of solid wood, veneered surfaces, or particle board with a plastic laminate. For solid wood, the type of sealing is the key factor: Are the surfaces oiled, lacquered, or untreated?
For oiled surfaces, an oil-based cleaning product (e.g., a special wood care oil with cleaning properties) is recommended, as it nourishes the wood and prevents it from drying out. Lacquered surfaces, on the other hand, are more resistant to water but should still not be treated with abrasive cleaners.
This is exactly the point. Aggressive cleaners quickly remove the protective film and make the wood susceptible to moisture.
Regarding frequency: gentle cleaning every month is usually sufficient, with more intensive cleaning only when visible dirt or stains are present.
Heavily soiled surfaces can be carefully restored with a very fine abrasive pad followed by re-oiling. However, this should be approached with caution and is more suitable for experienced DIYers.
I am also curious if anyone has noticed significant wear on the edges of the shelves and how these have been repaired, if applicable?

Which cleaning products do you recommend, how often should the shelves be cleaned ideally, and are there any special accessories availableAdditional information:
1. Cleaning products: A neutral, pH-balanced wood cleaner is ideal. Products containing ammonia or alcohol should be avoided, as they can dull and damage the surface.
2. Cleaning frequency: Depending on the room and usage, monthly cleaning is usually sufficient. Dust can be removed weekly with a dry microfiber cloth.
3. Accessories: An antistatic duster works well for quick interim cleaning. For wetter cleaning, I use microfiber cloths that absorb water well to minimize moisture on the surface.
4. Stain removal: For grease stains or other marks, specialized wood cleaners or a mild soapy solution are recommended, followed by thorough drying.
It is important not to saturate the surface with moisture, as it can cause the material to swell.
If the shelves are lacquered, applying a clear furniture wax occasionally can provide an additional protective layer.
I hope this helps with the proper care of your BILLY shelves.
