Hello everyone, I am looking for effective and child-safe mechanisms to install on the doors of my IKEA Besta units. The challenge is to have doors that are easy to use but at the same time prevent toddlers from opening them without permission. I am particularly interested in solutions that work without complicated disassembly and preferably remain visually discreet. What types of child locks or safety mechanisms have you tested on Besta doors that have proven effective? Are there differences between hinge doors and flap doors? Additionally, I would like to know if there are recommended products that can be easily attached without damaging the furniture. I look forward to practical experiences and tips!

I recommend simple turn locks that are mounted on the inside of the door. When attached with screws, they are inexpensive, effective, and barely visible from the outside.

There are also models with adhesive strips that you can try. However, they are not very durable.

I consider these adhesive locks to be completely pointless. A curious child can break them in seconds. And for anyone seeking more security, they are purely placebo. So if you want something safer, go straight for drilled-in locks that provide real security.

Magnetic systems sound interesting; how complicated is the installation? Do you need to drill holes, or can it be installed completely without drilling?

We drilled holes for the magnetic option back then. It does take a bit of effort, but the security is worth it. If drilling is not an option, I recommend at least trying combinations of twist locks plus adhesive grips, as this improves the chances of success.

Hey, I use a combination of magnetic locks and twist latches for Besta. At first, drilling felt a bit annoying, but the result is great: my kids don’t stand a chance anymore, and I don’t have to constantly tidy up. The doors still look great, with no bulky parts or visible bolts. If you want to make it a bit more fun for the kids, some magnetic systems require special keys, which can be really amusing because the kids think they have a treasure chest lock.

I recommend twist locks instead of adhesive tapes. Magnetic locks are good, but if you don’t want to drill any holes, there are limited options. The best combination is to install them on the inside and have at least two locks per door.
