achazdra414 Jun 2021 08:23Good morning everyone, I recently purchased some Ikea Brimnes furniture pieces (mainly the bed and wardrobe) for my rental apartment and am currently thinking about the best way to care for them so that they don’t show damage or cause issues when I move out.
Since the Brimnes series has a foil coating, I am especially interested in any specific cleaning tips that protect the finish or surface, and whether there are any recommendations regarding assembly or daily use to ensure the furniture lasts as long as possible.
Perhaps someone has experience with how to avoid or treat small scratches and whether certain cleaning products should be completely avoided because they can damage the surfaces.
I am also curious if there are any special rules in rental apartments concerning furniture care at move-out that I should be aware of to avoid problems with the landlord.
I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Good morning!
When it comes to caring for Ikea Brimnes furniture in rental apartments, there are quite a few things to keep in mind, especially if you want to keep the furniture looking as flawless as possible. The surface of Brimnes furniture is usually a foil laminate on a wooden frame, which makes it easy to maintain but also prone to scratches.
- Cleaning: Avoid aggressive or abrasive cleaning agents. The best option is a mild dish soap solution with a soft, slightly damp cloth.
- Avoid excessive moisture: Since the furniture is not made entirely of solid wood and the foil laminate is not completely waterproof, you should avoid standing water or very wet cloths, as this could cause the edges to swell.
- Scratches and minor damage: Small scratches can be touched up with color-matched furniture markers or special repair kits designed for foil surfaces. However, this only works if the damage is not too severe.
Because this is a rental apartment, I would recommend cleaning the furniture well before moving out and fixing any small damages if you cannot take the furniture with you. Some landlords require that any wear and tear on provided furniture be repaired or at least documented. This is especially worthwhile for affordable furniture like the Brimnes series.
One question for you: Have you already assembled the furniture? Sometimes it helps to check the screws and connections carefully before assembly. Improper assembly can lead to instability or even damage.
If you want, I can also give you tips on how to assemble the furniture correctly to optimize its durability.

- Step 1: Regularly remove dust with a dry microfiber cloth. This prevents dust particles from scratching the surface.
- Step 2: For stains or dirt, use a mild soap solution (dish soap + warm water). Dip a soft cloth into the solution, wring it out thoroughly so it is damp but not wet.
- Step 3: Wipe the surfaces, then immediately dry with a clean cloth to remove any moisture.
- Step 4: Avoid cleaning agents with alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives, as they can damage the laminate.
A common mistake with Brimnes furniture is applying too much weight or pressure on drawers or shelves. This can weaken the joints over time.
If you accidentally damaged corners or edges during assembly, you can use special repair kits, often consisting of wax sticks or laminate repair kits. These are quite effective if applied carefully.
One more tip for moving out: take photos of the furniture before handing it over to document any damage. Some landlords are strict about this, even if the furniture is your own.

I can only agree with the previous comments but would like to add from my experience that you shouldn’t underestimate Brimnes furniture, even for active users like me. 😉
- It is important to protect the laminated surface from UV light. Prolonged direct sunlight can make the laminate brittle or even cause slight fading.
- Also, sharp objects like keys or weights should not be placed directly on the surface to avoid scratches.
That’s exactly my personal tip: it’s always safer to use simple household methods.
If you want to really care for it, you can occasionally clean the surface with a slightly damp cloth and then treat it with a special furniture care cloth designed for laminate or plastic. This gives a pleasant shine and also offers some protection against dust and moisture.
And very important: if you use Brimnes furniture in a rented apartment where there are often visitors, make sure to explain that people should be careful. This way you avoid scratches and can enjoy it longer!
Good luck with it!
