Hello everyone,

I’m curious to know what items you might have removed from your house building and furnishing list after the initial enthusiasm wore off. Was it perhaps the electric blinds, the smart home system, the fireplace, a particular room, or other things?

If you removed anything, it would be interesting to know why. And for those who have already completed their build... did you regret any of these changes?

Thank you!

For our sauna in the basement, we decided to skip the shower to save on costs and space.

Outdoor hot tub was no longer an option

My personal dream

The purchase price is one thing, but the heating costs 50-70€ (about 55-75 USD) in electricity per month.
You could heat an entire house for that amount. Somehow, I just can’t bring myself to do it.

Back then, I would have liked 300-400m2 (3,230-4,305 sq ft) more garden space, but that’s no longer affordable. In 2014, that already meant 80,000 euros more.

Then a flat roof overhang for the children's rooms that would be used as a balcony, and 1 meter (3.3 feet) more in the kitchen. But roughly 30,000-40,000 euros more.

The rest were just whims, like air conditioning in every room, a pool, but otherwise very satisfied.

May I ask what you associate with having a hot tub in the garden? Originally, we wanted an indoor hot tub, but we dropped that idea because the affordable ones seem to be too noisy, and we don’t want to spend a "ridiculously high" amount.

I’m asking because with an outdoor hot tub, the neighbors can always watch when you're "whirling." I wouldn’t feel comfortable with that. But having one indoors would be great.

I wouldn’t want it outside either if everyone can look in. Ours will be set up outdoors under the roof of the lower terrace. No neighbor can see in because our basement level is above their roofs. A sloped site definitely has its advantages.

Privacy for the neighbors.

Because it’s heavenly to sit in warm water, especially during the cold season. Stars above, snow or sleet falling. Warm and cold.

Nothing like being indoors.
