Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to assemble my new IKEA Hemnes shelf and would like to know if you have any valuable assembly tips beyond the included instructions. I am especially interested in how to best prepare the individual parts, whether any particular tools prove to be especially useful, and how to avoid mistakes during assembly to ensure the shelf is stable and level in the end.

I have built several pieces of furniture before, but the Hemnes is somewhat more challenging for me due to its wooden components and joint techniques. Your advice would be very helpful, especially regarding alignment and installing the back panel. Thank you in advance!

Hello peelina!

That sounds like an exciting project! 😊 I recently assembled a HEMNES myself and can share a few practical tips to make your work easier:

- Definitely use a cordless drill with adjustable torque so you don’t over-tighten the screws. Wood tends to split if you apply too much force!
- Lay out all parts and screws sorted beforehand. This way, you know exactly what comes when and won’t lose track.
- For the large wooden pieces, I recommend working with a partner to position them accurately and align the joint points precisely.
- For the back panel, be sure to use a small carpenter’s square to ensure everything is at right angles before fastening it.

Good luck! I always feel a mix of excitement and pride with my first piece of furniture. You’ve got this! 🙂

This is an important point. Precise alignment during assembly prevents stress in the joints and significantly increases the stability of the furniture piece.

Additionally, I recommend the following structured approach:

- Before starting assembly, check all holes and drillings for any damage.
- Carefully read the included instructions and strictly follow the sequence of steps.
- Initially connect parts only loosely to allow adjustments before fully tightening at the end.
- When finalizing the tightening of connections, gradually increase the torque to avoid over-tightening any screws.
- Align the back panel properly, as neglecting this can cause the structure to tilt.

This ensures the construction is as flat and stable as possible. The furniture will then be more durable, and it will be less likely that screws loosen during use.

I completely understand your concerns. Furniture like the HEMNES can definitely be frustrating when you feel like something might go wrong.

My advice, which always helps me during assembly, is to be patient and take it step by step.

Even though it can be tempting to rush through everything, precise alignment and double-checking are more important than tightening screws quickly.

If something is unclear while attaching the back panel or you notice parts don’t fit exactly right, it’s better to go back and adjust it.

It also helps to realign everything once more before fully tightening and to use aids like wedges or supports to prevent the furniture from wobbling.

You can do it, and if you keep asking us questions along the way, we’re here to help!
