NOSAUHello everyone,
I will soon be moving into a new rental apartment and plan to install the Ikea Metod kitchen. I am particularly concerned about how to securely mount the cabinets and components while minimizing any damage to the property. This means I want to avoid causing any permanent harm to walls or floors to prevent conflicts with the landlord when moving out.
Do you have any installation tips specifically for Metod kitchens in rental apartments? I am especially interested in alternative fastening methods that require no or minimal drilling but still provide stable support. Are there practical tricks for alignment or protecting the walls during installation?
I appreciate any experiences, advice, or ideas you can share.

Hi,
I recommend securing the Metod wall cabinets with heavy-duty anchors, which usually only require a few holes and provide strong support. If drilling is completely off-limits, clamp feet or standing feet can help with tall cabinets.
For base cabinets, you can place small floor protectors under the feet to prevent scratching.

Try using mounting tape or strong double-sided adhesive tape for lighter parts on the wall; these can usually be removed without leaving residue. For Metod tall cabinets, floor supports are especially useful, as they transfer the load to the floor and protect the walls. And if drilling is unavoidable, make sure to fill the holes with appropriate wooden plugs or filler before moving out.
Important: Always measure carefully and use a spirit level to ensure everything is perfectly straight – otherwise, you might have trouble with the doors later on.
Interesting question. The requirement for tenant-friendly installation often conflicts with the necessary stability of a kitchen.
For me, the question is how tolerant landlords are regarding drilled holes. Of course, this depends on the rental agreement and the specific house rules.
One option might be to plan a freestanding solution, for example with support panels, or to keep the kitchen modular without fixed attachment to the wall.
Those who want to be on the safe side should inform the landlord about the installation in advance or ask whether minor drilling is permitted.
In my view, every recommendation must be adapted to the specific apartment situation.

Hello NOSAU,
I’m happy to share some tips for installing your Metod kitchen in a rental apartment. First of all, it’s important to check the agreements in your rental contract and the building rules before starting the installation.
- If drilling holes is allowed, I recommend using heavy-duty wall anchors for the upper cabinets and sturdy wall fastenings, as otherwise the stability may be compromised.
- If drilling is not allowed or only minimally possible, you can experiment with light pressure or hanging techniques for the base cabinets.
- To protect the walls, use protective film or cardboard during installation to prevent scratches.
- For small holes, you can use special filler from the hardware store when moving out, which can be easily removed.
It is also important to align the furniture evenly so that the doors and drawers close properly. Take your time to measure carefully using a spirit level and tape measure.
If you have any specific questions about any installation step, feel free to ask.

A tenant-friendly installation of Ikea Metod in rental apartments requires careful planning and the use of appropriate tools:
- Use wall fasteners only in places that can later be easily concealed, for example behind furniture.
- Alternatively, use freestanding tall cabinets with support legs as load bearers.
- For wall cabinets, use special clamp brackets if needed, which provide support without drilling.
- Protect wall and floor surfaces during installation with protective films or cardboard.
- Always use a spirit level and leveling strips to align the furniture properly.
The most important aspect is to avoid damage when moving out, so discussing plans with the landlord in advance is often advisable. This helps reduce uncertainties and risks.
