Hello everyone, I have recently assembled several Billy bookcases and noticed that there seem to be some common mistakes that often occur. I’m curious: based on your experience, what are the most frequent errors or pitfalls when assembling Billy bookcases? I’m especially interested in mistakes that are easy to overlook or only become apparent once the bookcase is already assembled. Maybe you can also share tips on how to best avoid these mistakes?

Screws, especially those for the shelves, are over-tightened

I think this topic is discussed far too little. All the instructions from IKEA are actually almost negligent: too tight = wood damage, too loose = instability. Why isn’t there a clear torque limit? Does anyone know of solutions that provide better stability instead of just being careful? What I want to suggest: maybe the issue is not only with the assembly but also with the original materials and design?

A common mistake is mixing up the side panels. If they are installed the wrong way around, the hole spacing will be incorrect, causing the shelves to be misaligned or not fit properly at all.

Additionally, in many cases, the shelf board is not positioned correctly, especially when the part has threaded inserts. This causes it to jam or sit crookedly, compromising the overall stability of the structure.

Mixing up the side panels

That’s a good point, thanks! It actually happened to me as well, and I had to take everything apart afterwards. Do you think there is an easy way to avoid mixing them up before assembly? For example, markings or tricks you use?

Also, I’m interested in how you generally ensure a sturdy, stable standing structure, especially without additional wall anchors. I had some trouble with wobbling despite what seemed like correct assembly.
