Hello everyone, I am planning to get a Billy bookcase from IKEA. Since I’ve heard that certain mistakes often occur during assembly, I would like to know: What are the most common assembly issues with the BILLY, and how can they be best avoided? It’s especially important for me to understand typical pitfalls so that I can approach the assembly correctly from the start. I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences or knowledge about which parts tend to cause problems and which steps require extra care.

It's great that you're asking such detailed questions right from the start! 🙂 With my BILLY cabinet, the most common issue was that the dowels weren’t inserted perfectly straight. This makes it difficult to screw in the screws and causes everything to be wobbly. Tip: always insert the dowels fully and as accurately as possible at a right angle! Also, take plenty of time for alignment – it’s definitely worth staying calm and working step by step! Good luck with the assembly, you’ll manage it! :-)

This is indeed a frequent issue. Additionally, I have noticed that the back panels are often not installed carefully enough. A poorly fitted back panel can quickly lead to instability. It is important to fit the back panel flush and without gaps into the designated groove profiles and to fasten the nails or screws securely in a crisscross pattern.

Furthermore, before starting assembly, all parts should be checked for completeness and damage. Defective or missing parts are often noticed too late and then cause complications during the build.

Good morning! I would like to provide a brief guide on how to avoid common assembly defects with the BILLY cabinet:

1. Preparation: Carefully check all parts and have a clean, level work surface ready.
2. Dowel installation: Insert dowels straight and precisely into the pre-drilled holes using appropriate tools. Tip: Before tightening the screws, lightly tap the holes with a hammer to secure the dowel in place.
3. Screw connections: Do not overtighten screws to avoid damaging the wood, but also do not leave them too loose, as this will cause the cabinet to wobble.
4. Back panel: Very important for stability – align it exactly without using force.
5. Use of a square or spirit level: To ensure the cabinet stands straight and all edges are flush.

Summary: Most defects are caused by inserting dowels at an angle and neglecting the back panel and screws.

I can absolutely confirm that. On my first attempt, I had trouble installing the dowels properly, which was really frustrating. I then learned to take my time during assembly and to take breaks if things weren’t going smoothly. For anyone unsure, I can only say: patience pays off! It also helped me to break the process down into small steps and to initially tighten each screw only lightly.

Additionally, I had problems at the beginning with the back panel because I nailed it in too quickly, which caused tension. It’s better to fix it loosely first and align everything at the end—this is a tip I’m happy to share.

One more important thing: The screws for the floors should not be over-tightened. Otherwise, the material can weaken quickly. Be careful with the hinges when assembling the cabinet doors, as they are not very sturdy. If you keep these points in mind, it usually goes smoothly.
