Hello everyone, I am currently looking into the differences between the newer Billy bookcases from IKEA and the older models that have been on the market for a longer time. I am especially interested in differences in material quality, workmanship, design, and possibly features like load capacity or assembly details. Are there any significant improvements or perhaps negative changes in the current Billy versions compared to the older ones? For me, it is important to know whether it is worth buying a new one or if it is better to stick with the older models. I am looking forward to your experiences and assessments.

In my experience, IKEA has improved the climate technology in the newer Billy models, meaning the sourcing and processing of the wood materials, to reduce the environmental footprint. You can notice this, for example, in the noticeably smoother surface and more even coloring.

Because the construction has become thinner, the shelves are also somewhat more sensitive to moisture. So, if you are storing items in a slightly more humid room, this should be taken into account.

That is very helpful, thanks for the precise information!

One more brief note on weight and load capacity: The newer Billy shelves are lighter, which makes handling easier, but they are still equipped with sturdy metal brackets, so the load-bearing capacity remains practically the same. However, I recommend always securing the shelves to the wall, as their height has sometimes increased over the years, raising the risk of tipping over.

What I also appreciate: Some new Billy models offer optional built-in cable management for technology and lamps, which was unthinkable in the past.

Oh, this all sounds very much like IKEA simply adapted the Billy shelf to better fit modern homes 😉. Thinner materials, softer white finish, easier assembly, and simple features like cable management – they clearly put some thought into it.

When it comes to materials, it seems to me that the new shelves sometimes use slightly thinner wood-based panels, which reduces the weight

Less weight is definitely a plus, but what about long-term durability? Does anyone have experience with that? My old Billy shelves have been standing without any issues for over 15 years, so I’m a bit skeptical.

That’s a great question! 😊 In my experience, modern Billy shelves are quite durable, but you should take care with maintenance, for example, avoid placing overly heavy loads on the shelves and keep them away from moisture.

How about the long-term quality?

I have a Billy shelf myself that’s about 10 years old, and it still feels very sturdy, even though some edges are slightly worn. But honestly, for the price, you really can’t complain! 🙂

I would say if you value traditional solidity, the older model is a good choice. However, if you’re looking for functionality and design, the new shelves are a great alternative.
