Hello everyone,

I have an issue with an IKEA Malm dresser in my bedroom. When I lightly touch it or lean on it, the piece of furniture noticeably wobbles, which worries me a bit because I’m not sure if this affects its stability or how best to fix it. The dresser stands on a laminate floor, and I have already checked that all the screws are properly tightened.

I would like to know if you have any practical tips to prevent or fix wobbling in Malm furniture. Are there specific assembly methods, additional fastenings, or leveling materials that work particularly well?

Thanks for your help!

First, check if the floor is truly level. If not, use thin felt pads or specialized furniture wedges. Always fully tighten the screws again. If possible, you can also secure the furniture to the wall, which reliably prevents wobbling.

To prevent wobbling in Malm dressers, there are several effective methods that I will explain in detail below:

1. Wall attachment: Always use the included brackets or special furniture anchors to secure the dresser to the wall. This is especially important for tall furniture like the Malm to ensure stability.

2. Furniture glides with height adjustment: On laminate floors, a dresser can wobble easily if the floor has small uneven spots. Use glides that can be individually adjusted in height. Common options are plastic glides with screw threads or felt pads.

3. Replace or retrofit feet: Malm dressers often have fixed feet that do not compensate for uneven floors. Furniture shims or adjustable screw feet that can be installed afterwards under the dresser are suitable here.

4. Assembly check: A common cause is screws that are not fully or evenly tightened. Inspect all connection points, especially on the back panel and sides, as well as the drawer fastenings.

5. Rubber mats or anti-slip pads: To prevent the dresser from sliding and thereby increase stability, rubberized pads can be placed under the feet.

Important: If wobbling persists despite all these measures, the dresser may have a manufacturing defect or warped parts. In that case, the IKEA customer service hotline also offers replacement or returns.

If you like, I can provide specific product recommendations. Did you assemble the dresser yourself, or did someone else do it? Sometimes this can affect assembly errors.

First, it is important to analyze the cause of the wobbling: it may be due to uneven flooring, partially installed screws, or missing wall anchors.

I can only agree with that. The official assembly instructions for Malm furniture explicitly recommend securing the dresser with screws. Especially with laminate flooring, even the smallest unevenness can have a significant impact on stability.

In addition, I recommend attaching felt pads to the feet to reduce friction and the tendency to slip.

Alternatively, small wooden furniture wedges can be used to level out unevenness and reduce pressure points.

Finally, a reminder to regularly check the fasteners, as screws can loosen over time due to stress.
