Hello everyone,

I am currently considering the idea of modifying the IKEA Malm bed frame, as I have read that certain modifications can not only improve stability but also optimize storage space. I am particularly interested in understanding the specific benefits such alterations might bring, for example in terms of durability, comfort, or the overall usability of the bed frame.

Are there any experiences regarding how such modifications affect long-term functionality? Which materials and methods are recommended for this? And is the effort really worth it compared to, for instance, investing in a different bed?

Looking forward to your opinions and experiences!

Modifying the Malm bed frame can significantly enhance its stability and create additional storage space. This makes the frame overall more robust and often more comfortable for everyday use.

The Malm bed frame has a rather simple design by itself, which makes it prone to deformation under heavy loads. Modifications that add, for example, extra cross slats or a sturdier central support significantly increase load capacity and can thus extend durability.

Solid hardwood or plywood panels are well-suited as reinforcement materials and are durable. Fastening with screws combined with nuts and anchors should be done carefully to avoid gaps or play.

That largely depends on your DIY skills and budget. For users who want to customize the frame and are familiar with home improvement, it is often more cost-effective than buying a completely new bed. However, those seeking uncompromising stability and comfort should also consider purchasing a new one.

I would like to add a few points regarding the modification of the Malm bed frame:

Many people have issues with the support panel, as it often bends. Converting it with stronger slats or a plywood board can help solve this problem. This keeps the mattress more evenly supported, which improves comfort and protects the mattress.

Additionally, installing extra drawers or under-bed storage boxes can significantly increase the storage space beneath the bed. This can be a major advantage, especially in small apartments.

It is important to take precise measurements before starting the modification and to consider the weight – some changes can significantly increase the bed frame’s overall weight.

If you have any questions, I’m happy to help!

Exactly! A year ago, I modified my Malm bed frame by adding an extra center support. The result is fantastic! No more sagging, much more stable, and the comfort has significantly improved :-)

I also built two large drawers underneath as part of a storage conversion – super practical and saves a lot of space! If you have some DIY skills, you should definitely try it! It takes some work, but the benefits are definitely worth it! 🙂
